Exhaust fumes

Hello, I have had exhaust fumes coming into the cab (t6) for some time . I took it to the garage today and they have found the fumes to be coming from the exhaust manifold . They have advised me that to fix this , they will need to replace the turbo as the turbo and exhaust manifold comes as 1 complete kit.Is this the case ??please help . Thank you

Not heard of that before, are they sure its not the common cracked egr pipe?

I have checked that myself and did advise the garage this was a common fault . No cracks, soot or any signs of fumes leaving the egr pipe?

As that sounds expensive, I would insist on seeing the evidence for myself.

yes they want £1000!! Thanks mate I think they’re trying to pull a fast one as I’ve read on another thread that the exhaust manifold was an easy fix .

Even if they were correct (which I very much doubt) then the fact that they would replace the turbocharger, as well as manifold gaskets, fluids etc for a thousand pounds seems suspiciously cheap, go with your instincts and steer clear!

I’ve just priced a turbo charger for around £250 and a manifold for around the same . But yes thanks for your advice . I may steer clear

Are you talking about a reconditioned turbo? I can't see you getting a new, genuine turbo and manifold for £250!
It's not a simple job to do, (those days are long gone) and a competent garage will charge proper money to do the job properly, which involves, among other things, coding the ECU to provide an increase in oil pressure initially after fitting the new turbo.
This fairly long thread describes the consequences of letting incompetent people replace a turbo, they charged him £2,200 but wrecked his engine.

As Dellmassive says you really need a second opinion.

Search for VAG or VW specialists in your area rather than just any local independent garage... at least then you know your van is in safe hands..
