Falken Wildpeak on 17 or 18" ?

I have a T28 and have decided on the Falkens as best choice. I'll be buying new steels for the van. What are views on the difference between 17" 235/65 and 18" 235/55 either with this tyre or others. I've read there can be quite a difference in handling and comfort? Any views appreciated.

I have 17" 235/65 on GP Steels and they are more 'bouncy' and long legged, but really nice to drive in comparison to std alloys on 235/35 17's. Speedo is just out. I was going to swapi n the summer but never did. This year we have driven to Corfu and back and two other French trips (one in snow). Snow performance (on a 4motion) and wet weather is brilliant.

What about 235/55 on 17”….Speedo would be correct?

Did your van come with 16" wheels originally? Standard 16's are a slightly smaller diameter than the standard 17's and the van will be coded accordingly. 235/65 should be virtually perfect on a 17" chassis but will under read a touch on a 16".

235/65/17 is meant make the Speedo read same as GPS speed. Unless original spec and/or coding was for 16s

your right. I went from 235/55's to 65's with a lumpyier tread pattern all on 17's. I have a 'normal' 235/65 as a spare and it is smaller (so it fits in the spare space, with a mod on the bracket). Speedo is showing maybe 4~5% under reading. I did put an extra gauge on the dash for this but its so close I binned it and am 'just careful'.

Interesting, I understood it that it didn't under-read and was the biggest you could go without this problem.

So from what you're saying if your speedo is showing 70, you are infact doing 73?

Also he interested to hear about this bracket mod as I am looking to switch to a 235/65/17 Falken AT setup, having a 4motion ideally want the spare to be the same size or within mm's

I am running 235/65/17 Wildpeaks and the VW speedo underreads by 1mph across most speeds, ie when I am doing 70mph on the VW speedo I am actually doing 71mph on my Sat Nav. I never use my speedo anyway as I have a sat nav on the dash that is ignition live on with the 12v socket and so I use this for my speed.

you are spot on re: "So from what you're saying if your speedo is showing 70, you are infact doing 73?"

I dont think you will get 235/65/17 Falken AT tyre up, plus the weight is a massive issue. This is some else's - see attachment, but mine looks similar works a treat on a non AT tyre of the same size. I also have a repair kit and pump and I guess I will just make a call if I have a puncture how far I am from a the right size tyre  Plus I also have some blocks of HD ply/steel plate so I can use the normal jack with bigger tyres

You can get a 235/65/17 in the cradle and up albeit I do use a trolley jack that I keep in the van all the time and I did have to lower the tyre pressure a bit however I also keep a small Milwaukee tyre inflator. That looks like a good upgrade though.

hi FerrisBFW,
I am a new member and trying to decide on a set of wheels for my new T6.1 (especially for muddy conditions).
I have seen the photo of your steel wheels and 235/65 R17 tyres. The set up you have is what I have possibly settled on too (except with Geolandar GO15 in the same size).
Could I ask you whether you have had any clearance/rubbing problems ? Did you need spacers at all ? Any regrets ?
Thanks for your help.

I have 235/65/17 wildpeaks on VW Devonports and they rub on limit of steering, 15mm spacers and extended wheel studs from Transporter HQ sorted it, Looks better too, I run 42 psi as an aside.
You wont get one underneath as a spare so keep the original spare in place for limping to a tyre fitter, I always have a spare new Wildpeak waiting at home.

thanks for that info RichP.
I'm getting a set of VW rims, the same as FerrisBFW has; maybe the offset will be OK for mine. I have ben trawling through loads of threads on this subject......

Would this be able to be adjusted using vcds?

It shouldn't be possible to have the same error at all speeds. The extra distance travelled will increase as a percentage so the speedo error will change too.

That's unusual. I've read a lot of these 235/65/17 threads and the only time that I recall the speed being more than 1 mph out (at high speeds) was on a 16" chassis.

I will give it some tests and observe as I am sure you are right, as I said I dont pay any attention to my speedo reading unless doing things like this as I solely drive off of my Sat Nav speed.
