Flashing coil light start/stop error P164B

Hi folks, this has been discussed before!

Eyup folks, hope you’re all ok.

Similar problem to last time, but this is where I’m at now, I’m running out of ideas and money, my guy who looks after my van hasn’t come across this problem either.

Coil light flashing /Start stop error , plugged in and needed an oil pressure switch, had this fitted,

Two weeks later coil light flashing again, won’t rev over 3000 rpm when driving until it’s warm and you turn off and on again, then it’s fine for the rest of the day.
Plugged in, it’s saying oil pressure switch again, there’s two of them on this van so fitted the second one today .

Coil light still flashing Start/stop error on dash and same problem again, plugged back in, still says oil pressure switch, but obviously they’re all replaced.

Saw on here someone who had this problem then fitted an oil pressure regulator valve . Fitted this!! This fixed theirs but mine still doing it?!

Anyone had this or have any ideas?!!
Apologies for long boring post!!
Fault code always P164B
T6 150 2016 (66)

First off, is the oil pressure switch connector loose or clean? Is it accessible? You could just recheck the connector and ensure it is clean. V cheap fix before going any further.

Once took my old Passat in for a new ECR ($$$ :-( ) and as I drove it away, lots of lights popped up on the dash. About turned and back in to VW. It was dirty connectors, which had just been replugged but caused an intermittent open circuit.

Hi buddy, not yet, I’m booked in with Vw at the end of this month, I always avoid main dealers, but so far I can’t find anyone who can fix it, so I’ve taken the plunge !!
I’ll let you know what the outcome is if they can fix it. I’m already £700 in and not fixed, and let’s face it, VW are going to rinse me as well!

Our issue is incredibly similar. Same code, same symptoms. Only difference is i haven’t done the valve yet. Out of interest does your light tend to stay off once the engine is warm? Mines going to a local specialist tomorrow. I’ll be sure to share any valuable findings

Thanks so much, any help would be greatly appreciated.
My light will stay on until you turn it off and back off again, if I the engine is warm enough, it’ll stay off, but if it’s still cold it’ll come straight back on!
I’m not sure if I mentioned in my last reply, but someone else had the same problem and it was a fuel pressure sensor.
Good luck, let me know how you get on, I hope it’s not too expensive

I’ve done the pressure sensors but that hasn’t fixed it. Yet to get the regulator valve. Hanged so my fingers are crossed for that.

Hi. My 2017 T6 has the same issue. Flashing coil light, and the stop start isn't working (not a bad thing). If I stop and turn the engine on and off the light goes out. I had the oil pressure sensor changed today but no joy. Did you get to the bottom of it? The code I have is P164b00

Hey buddy, yep exactly the same , once the engine is warm it’s fine .
Mines in VW now, they currently can’t fix it either!! It’s at Vw as two other garages have tried and couldn’t fix it.
Vw found an engine mount had gone and rubbed some wires, they thought that was it, but it’s still doing it!!

Yes please let me know how you get on, any help would be appreciated.

Good luck with yours

Oil pressure regulator valve replacement has solved my issue. Massive thanks to this forum for help and advice.

Time to have a chat with the garage that told me I need a new engine I think..

Hi folks, so I’ve just got it back from Vw now.
Even though I’d had both oil pressure switches and the oil regulator valve fitted previously, it still had the problem.
Ve have had it for over a week.
Turns out an engine mount had gone , and rubbed through some wires, this alone didn’t fix it, but this along with one of the new pressure switches not functioning properly he thinks has fixed it
Until I turn it on in the morning when it’s cold I’m still a little apprehensive!!
But I will update tomorrow

⚠️⚠️UPDATE⚠️⚠️
Eventually ended up in VW for this issue as nowhere managed to fix it, I had an engine mount broken and a damaged wire, this they thought fixed it, then it came back again, they checked the oil pressure switches again which were new, they then thought one of the switches was faulty, this worked, BUT ONLY FOR TWO MONTHS, then back to flashing coil light and loss of power, they now think the sump is gunked up and causing the oil pressure switch to stop working and causing the issue to return.
They now want to do an engine flush , take the sump off etc!!
So since about October last year I still have the issue, I hope this helps others if you have this problem!!
I’ll update again when it goes back in , in a couple of weeks!

Hi P1les
Have you had a luck/ anymore ideas to resolve the issue? My van has started doing the same. My local garage said it’s most likely the DPF that needs regenerating so take it on a longer drive. I have done this and no luck. I have put a fault finder on the van but no faults showed up.
Cheers

Hey CFoster, gutted you’re having the same issue.
Mine hasn’t been back in yet to have an engine flush and the sump checked, since having another oil pressure switch fitted last time (about a month ago) it hasn’t done it again yet, but I’m sure it will, I literally can’t afford to have it done yet so I’m hoping it’ll last a little longer.
I’ve been throwing money at it since October last year!!

So after having numerous oil pressure switches, fuel pressure switches checked, an egr valve and loads of other stuff checked and changed, they think the sump being gunked up is causing the oil pressure switch to stop working properly and pinging up the fault causing the semi limp mode when it’s cold.

I’ll update again once I’ve got some money to try again.

I hope you get a cheaper result

Thanks for your reply. I hope this resolves your issue and I will be keen to know the result. It is however good that it hasn’t come on in the last month so fingers crossed! As I am earlier in this stage than you are and nothing is showing on a fault reader yet, what would you recommend I do first or would you just continue to monitor? Obviously I want to get rid of the flashing light, but I don’t want to waste money on changing non associated parts.

I’m mechanically useless, so sadly I don’t know what to suggest, apart from get it plugged in again and find a good mechanic.
But I’ll definitely let you know how I get on next, and hope you benefit from my threads so far!

Cheers pal. Really appreciate it! I am
Certainly benefiting from the thread so thank you so far. And fingers crossed you get it sorted next time it is in.

Hi, watching this one with interest as my 2019 T28 has just started displaying the same fault. Same P164B00 code and symptoms. Mine started 2 weeks after an oil and filter change and its first 300+ mile long run towing in a year. I potentially made the mistake of fitting a cheapy GSF brand oil filter but I did use the reccommened Castrol oil.
Does anyone know if you have to drop the oil to remove the oil filter or can you take the filter it out for inspection without? Also any heads up on where the two oil sensors are located? - Thanks!!
