Flat battery after 10 mins.......but only after engine is warm.

Hi, we have a T5 and have a battery issue. When the engine is at ambient temperature it starts ok and if I turn it off whilst engine still cool, it starts again fine. However, when the engine is warm after a drive, the battery has drained after about 10 mins. There doesn't seem to be a parasitic drain and I've cleaned the terminals on the battery. Might it be an issue with the fan or pump that continue after engine shutdown? Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

I can hear the pump running but not the fan
Does the pump stop eventually or just keep running, hence the flat battery?
The auxiliary cooling pump / pumps are supposed to run after the engine stops and are controlled via a temperature switch.
There have been previous cases of the pumps continuously running and flattening the battery.

EDIT: The battery still shouldn’t be flat after running a small electrical pump for 10 minutes so it maybe you also have a defective battery which needs load testing / replacement. Also check the main earth strap on the right hand side engine mount.

Thanks for the advice.

I've had the van at the auto electricians and the issue turned out to be a heavily corroded battery connection. All fine now.

Doesn’t make sense.
My explanation? Thought it was pretty clear. Garage did full electrical diagnostics and couldn't find a problem. They suggested it could be the battery terminal as it was heavily corroded and changed it for me. Now works perfectly. Changing the terminal is all they did.

Still does not make sense - your first post stated that you had "cleaned the terminals on the battery".

I should have been clearer. It was one of the conductors/terminals that attaches to the battery from the vehicle that they changed (apologies if wrong terminology, I'm not a mechanic - the brass connector shown in pic). I had cleaned it up as best I could removing as much crap as possible but changing it seems to have done the trick. Battery was absolutely fine.

OK understood, if that’s a pic’ of your battery get some protection on it to prevent accidental grounding (plastic cover) and corrosion (jelly)
