Front crank shaft seal leaking

I also have the dreaded front crank seal leaking.
Vw in Croydon will not repair it under the all in warranty, I've tried customer care and they are no help either.
Any idea's on how to change this decision as lots of people on here seem to have theirs covered?

You could try another dealer maybe? I think I got mine pushed through because as a company we lease 25+ Transporters, but I’m not 100% sure the service desk have made that link so it could just be luck.

The problem you have is that the job is somewhere between £800 and £1000 and there’s a very good chance it’ll happen again.

Maybe say to Croydon that you’ll pay, but ask how long they guarantee their work for, so if it leaks again in 18 months will it be covered under their own parts + labour warranty?

Did you buy the vehicle from them?

Yes bought from them and serviced with them
Normally if you bought it from them they take good care from you. From my experience in dealers we used to do the job under good will if it was either out of warranty or a repeat failure

Just been reading some other peoples disappointments with the crank shaft seals leaking. Been too VW dealership to have my final service plan service carried out today. Bearing in mind my vehicle hasn’t long gone out of warranty coming up to four years old being told my t6 is also leaking oil on the crank shaft seals. The chap from VW telling me this is a common fault with these vans. Surely this should be a recall as so many customers who pay big money for these vehicles are having these expensive repair costs on vehicles some of which have not yet been run in
The crankshaft seals I was told were a cheap batch, common on al lT6 onwards. Mechanic says it’s money from America. Our 2 weeping but not dripping, wipe down before MOT. Will do when timing belt comes due.
T5, T5.1 never leaked and over 150k.

Any CFCA (180ps) owners don’t need to be concerned about this issue, there was enough common sense at the time to use an alloy casting instead of plastic.

It says the following in the all in warranty docs.....

  1. Miscellaneous
The rectification of oil leaks is not covered and the cost of seals and gaskets will only be accepted where they are required as a direct consequence of a valid claim under the Warranty.

I guess this is why. Basically they're saying they will cover seals if they need replacing as part of another job but wont cover the seal failing on its own.

same here 2019 T6, picked up oil leak at 56k service and the computer says no!

so given I brought the vehicle private in April 23 I have no legal come back on him?

I thought 12 months Warranty=peace of mind

I have a warranty that is almost worthless

I have free MOTs with a local wait time of 6 weeks, again worthless and paid local garage

I have to get VW assist out to sort emission lights that required a software update, again 6 week wait to book in to VW ..... pretty useless although the VW Assist guy was good and knew his stuff

and now an oil leak which from what I am hearing is down to a poorly designed or manufactured crank seal that VW don't want to acknowledge

Is my best course of action maybe going back to the stealers and trying to push through VW as a "fit for purpose issue" or known fault given VW have now redesigned the seal with new part number (in 2019?) with some on here suggesting the original dimensions or tolerances were out by 1.5-2mm? How difficult would that be proving how many people are having the same problem due to a sh*t component. But 4 years old and having not purchased from them I cant see them helping much.

other option is remove cover, clean sump, monitor, sack of the stealers when warranty expires next May, go independent specialist and get seal plus cam belt plus water pump done for probably for about the same money they want for doing the seal.

Had to laugh....what cleaner do they use that costs £27 a pop..... a bit of rag and some solvent degreaser, noticed it on my service also £6.21 plus vat for cleaner for what?

my previous motors have mainly been Toyota and Nissan 4x4s and never had any of the issues I have had with VW. had more confidence in the old T5 smoker atm.

Rant Over:mad:

When I thought mine was leaking I called in at my local VW indi and due to the very small amount of oil visible externally he said not to worry about it and monitor it until the cam belt was due. He reckons it would have to leak a fair bit to contaminate the belt. Not saying he is correct, as all posts on here show that most mechanics have different ideas about things.
What I would say is go to a trusted indi who will remove the timing belt cover and make an assessment.
However, on next service he checked it and it’s not leaking.
It was the idiot (me) that glugged oil down the side of the engine while refilling after oil change.

What’s to lose in trying?

I'm on it lol

as Bigsidavies said if I get no joy will give it a clean off at the weekend then monitor until I decide to do timing belt and water pump and then, above all costs, take it to an independent garage.

Does anyone happen to know the old part number and/or the new

what did VW actually change and are these new ones still failing?

Bought a T6 with 29,000 miles on clock..crank shaft oil seal gone after having van only 8 months and driven only 2000 miles..also oil sensor went which my guy fixed..got flywheel done on warranty but might consider extended warranty
the T5 I had for,10,years had few problems ..seems the quality of the transporters is going downhill with repairs required at 31,000 miles. Flywheel could have cost me£1800

Both common issues on a T6 unfortunately.

And agreed about slight drop on quality vs T5/T5.1.

My T5.1 DMF lasted till 98k miles before needing being done.

My T6 has now had two DMF before 90k Miles.

Just had my front crank seal done..only 31000 miles on the clock and had the van fron VW dealer for only 9 months..luckily the flywheel was replaced under warranty ..shocked at these faults with so little mileage..had a T 5 for ten years with few major problems too
