H4's V's LED's - Real World Test

Std halogen loom multi plug into back of headlight, the headlight internal loom will split it to where it wants, gaining either a single 3 pin h4 or 2 h7 plugs to handle hi low beams, then will have a plug for indicators, and a plug for where ever they have put the daylight running lamp, and also the side light connector.

BUT let's not jinx it, until we know for sure, as although this is logical, they screwed up the h4 output!

From that its possible that the connector is the same for the H4 and H7 lights, and that there is a internal difference.
It is then most likely that some coding is needed to get the H7 units to work properly. Might be CANBUS errors and those kind of faults when changing units.

Just my thought on the matter..

Hiya,

Spoken to my dealer sales rep, and asked him to quiz workshop. Will be calling him Monday from converters.. The slower they go the more they have to fit f.o.c! Looks like it will be a minimal costing to VW, so more likely if so and straight forward that they would not want the bad press and do a good will gesture.... But only if approached in the right manner.

Took some photo so fmy lights for you today, if they are H4 I've never seen one with a shround like in the last photo. The diagram @Loz PDF shows they are H7

Those are the H7 lights BUT the H4's have the deflector/shroud as shown in your last photo.

I have just returned from a drive down the M5, I covered about 25 miles returning home and a good 50 vehicles past me.

Every vehicle new and old as it came past illuminated my lane and I could actually see the road well (as I would expect to see it), as they then past me you could visibly see the road ahead they were traveling in well but the road my lights were covering was much darker. Back to a very poor spread of light from my lights.

I could look across and see their lane many meters ahead better than mine. The darker the tarmac the worse it is.

@BIgben How have you got on with VW Customer Care?

The reason I ask, is that alongside you I have been in contact with them and after initially thinking they were taking this seriously and believing they were going to help resolve this, tonight they have pretty much mugged me off.

I have gone down the dealer route and had the H4's checked. They told me
a)Headlights on Transporters are always quite poor (I pointed out that H7 and LED users are not unhappy and after owning VW vans for 25 years I have never had any issues with headlights before - including T2's, T25's and a T5)
b) The lenses might be dirty (I pointed out the van is cleaned weekly)
c)That I have fitted non VW bulbs and technically I have invalidated the warranty (I told them b*ll#cks)
I then asked them to adjust them to maximum legal height. They supposedly did and also told me they had cleaned them for me! (Cheeky Bar Stewards!)
Guess what, it's made no difference.

I then emailed VW customer care and explained the problem with my H4's, the growing feeling of unrest on various VW forums, the local dealer response and was assigned a customer care assistant to my case. A few days ago I had a good chat with the guy and he seemed genuinely concerned and promised to investigate thoroughly and would do what he could to resolve the issue.
Tonight I have chased him, only to be told he has spoken with the local dealer, they have said there is nothing more they can do, they checked them thoroughly, adjusted them, found nothing wrong and he has also told me that because I have fitted non VW bulbs it is technically out of warranty.
I have now told him I will refit the original bulbs and I want to drop it back to the dealers and leave it with them for a week and they can get their "master" tech to take it out every night in the dark and we will see if he still considers it safe and acceptable afterwards.
He has gone away to see if the local dealer can accommodate this.

I also asked if VW will retro fit me H7's but he told me they don't know if they are compatible??!! Something to do with the Amps??!!

Watch this space, I haven't finished yet. Rant over!

Good for you. Change of bulbs invalidates warranty WTF. So if a bulb blows and you replace it with new (same type) bulb your warranty is invalidated? Pile o shite.

Hi guys.
I've been flat out at work and sometimes working out of signal.
They have tried to phone me once every other day or so and have left a couple of messages and I've tried to ring back but no answer. In total I think I've missed 3 calls in just over a week.
Absolutely nothing for a few days.

Exactly what I told the dealer and the customer CARE assistant!

When you overtake a lad out training on his bicycle and his light creates a van shadow in your path, you know there's an issue.

I spoke to VW CC about H4's and they flatly denied that there is a problem - 'nothing in the Knowledge Base Sir!' The reason for that is they are in total denial, its only going to get recorded when they accept there is a problem.

I'm expecting a follow up call on my other woes in a week or so, I'll make sure that he knows that it's a widespread concern both here and on the German forum.
