Has Anyone Fitted The Cate Motorbike Carrier/rack?

I like that a lot.
It could be an option for me to take my bike away on a long trip and still have my van. I was thinking of using my trailer but this limits the speed I could drive at.

Does it make the van bounce when going over bumps or is the front too high. I guess it works better with a 4motion.

I have VB Air suspension, so the van self-levels whatever the load.

Initially I intended to use it for track days, but I don't seem to be doing so many of those (even before the pandemic), but I am looking to change my Triumph Trophy (a lovely bike, but too heavy for this carrier) for something that is light enough to be carried (less than 250kg) and comfortable enough for both me & the missus to visit local areas while camping in the van.

However as yet, I haven't driven anywhere with the bike on - and my van is 2wd.

Sorry - I fitted it myself, but I would have thought that a towbar specialist could do it quite easily, as it mounts to the chassis in the same way.

Just bringing up an old thread rather than start a new one.

Getting a 2021 coast and sourced a cate rack from eBay, not sure the springs on a 21 coast if they are t28, 30 or 32 but would you recommend higher rated springs on the rear? Air is cost prohibitive.

Thanks for the posts it was f helpful in making the decision the cate was the right one to go for.

Cheers.

To be honest, it’s hard to tell how the weight would affect OEM springs as I’ve always had air. But you are talking potentially three average people in weight so I’m sure it must make a difference to increase the rear springs, but would that compromise the every day ride? I’m afraid I can’t say.

there is a guy in germany that designed and manufactured his own version withe TüV approval. Cost was approx €800 ish.

if anyone is interested I can find the details

That price is cheaper than the Cate frame alone without the adaptor plates so could well be of interest to some if it is accurate, so please post the details.

I’m not sure one would need TÜV approval on a UK registered van, but it certainly gives peace of mind. I always thought that getting such approval was rather expensive and not really feasible for the individual. I know that I had a hard time finding TÜV approved tyres for my grey import motorbike when I lived in Germany because the tyre manufacturers wouldn’t do the required testing for such a comparatively scarce bike. Having said that, I was always surprised how many custom parts are available from Germany.

Just reading through this old thread and I am searching for options. CATE seems like the gold plated solution ( at great cost) ‍…… I’ve got a KTM 1090 adv r I’d like to carry around and a 690. One at a time obviously. ……… Shaun thanks for sharing - how have you found the rack ? All good ? Any long term observations ? My other thought was to get one made with box section onto the chassis with smaller box section attached to a base to slide into and lock off. ……….

Thanks fluff. That looks like what I’m after - but 1500 euros seems pretty steep …….. I’m pretty sure I can get one fabricated for a lot less. If I do I’ll update this thread. I’m sure there are a few of us who want to travel with their bikes

I’ve not used it as much as I expected (not done any more track days for a start), but when I have used it, it has been great. It is relatively easy to fit and the bike has always seemed secure. Perhaps the only thing I might do different is omit the checkerplate. It adds weight and isn’t necessary with the channel, though it could be useful for carrying other items. I’ve nearly used it to carry a mobility scooter for example. All in all, I have no regrets and I am glad that I have it.

Looking at that other one from Germany, the cost is similar to what I paid for mine, but it is not clear from a quick read (my German is not fluent by any means) that the approved load capacity is as high or that it actually is TÜV approved (it looks like they suggest that can be obtained for €110), not that such approval is necessary in UK, but might be needed in the EU and it would always be useful to reassure insurance companies should there be a mishap.

Shaun. One last question - would you know how thick the plates are that attach to the chassis points please ? Many thanks in advance. Scotty

At a guess, I would say 10 - 12mm. I can’t measure them easily at the moment, because the van is reversed against a wall.
