Head gasket?

What that ment to mean?
It was just a bad attempt at humour! I thought it may be mildly amusing to @DXX, as a bent conrod and a cocked piston was a very likely outcome, but not necessarily what people want to hear!

It was a bent con rod in the end after the egr cooler cracked internally leaking coolant into the block. A new engine from TPS is £4500 with injectors and glow plugs and a 12 month warranty. £7k all fitted. Very expensive but what can you do?!
May be worth asking the dealer to give you the injectors for you to have overhauled at your local Bosch/Delphi specialist, as I'm sure service exchange injectors through TPS will be mile less cost effective.

I can’t see why it needed a new engine. One connecting rod bent or even all four doesn't require a new engine.
No, true, but all the time and parts taken to rebuild worked out to not much less as the new engine was cheaper than expected. New glow plugs, new injectors , new cam belt, water pump, aux belt and tensioner plus a years warranty made the extra all seem worth it.

Volkswagen recommend a replacement engine if they have bent a rod.
In a warranty case, they won't pay out if the dealer repairs (rod replacement for a bent rod, say)

It was appreciated, I’ve seen too many ‘train wrecks’ to be too shocked or empathetic.
Trust VW to swoop in and pick the bones clean.
