Heated Windscreen or Remote Controlled Webasto-style heater?

Heated screen and quick scrape of side windows - ready for the off in 2 mins. Given the winter months are generally not as cold these days in the UK, It would be interesting to note how many days a year we actually need to defrost windscreens.

Yeah, back in 2022 Avanti West Coast was the most complained about train operator (due to cancellations and late running) yet the government of the time gave them a bonus (not even paying just the fees… an actual bonus) of over £4m of taxpayer money!
Why? How?
Truly dodgy shenanigans.
Said government also declared, following a review, HS2 was definitely value for money and signed it off… and we still haven’t had an agreed cost estimate! Who starts any project without understanding what it will cost? Let alone declaring it provides value - how can you assess that if you don’t understand what you will pay?
Rail in the UK is just bizarre. Rewarding failure, writing blank cheques.
And they got top place again for 2024!!!

Don’t worry - as each franchise ends, they’re returning to state ownership and management! What a great idea!!! (No one ever said!!!)

Good point. Since the start of November we’ve only had to scrape ice or hard frost a handful of times and that’s at 5:30am when so before the day starts warming up. I still have the same can of de-over I bought in October 2023.
Condensation however has been miserable due to the moist air - a function of it being that bit warmer all the time and the dew point.
If we leave it for the A/C to blast away on full it can take almost five minutes to clear the screen. We have an absorbent granual type dehumidifier in the car too (don’t use the van for commuting).
A night heater may help with keeping condensation of the inside of the glass?

Here’s a MetOffice OpenData interactive map showing that:

Where I live in York it says median of 40.

I reckon I scrape maybe ten days with my pattern of usage. However the number of days where I need air to be blowing warm before it’s safe to see out of the windows is probably 20 days. Even with AirCon on.

Number times cold at a campsite in early spring or late autumn is about another 10 days.

The ability to warm up after a long winter beach walk is another two or three.

We have both, heated screen & Webasto. To be fair, they are very different tools for doing very different jobs. I’d no more put the heated screen on to warm my tootsies, than I would use the Webby to defrost the screen. To use the Webasto to defrost the screen would take at least 1/2 hour, whereas the heated screen does the same job (better?) in under a minute. I honestly don’t think it’s a binary choice, they are both good at what they do, but not necessarily good at doing each other’s job.
As ever, just my 2 penneth.

Yes - I agree... BUT... the Diesel Heater will clear the screen.... the heated Windscreen wont heat the van.

So if its 1 or the other.... Diesel Heater..... Also helps make up for the missing heated seats :(

Avoids meeting people... 2 St Bernard's on a Lead (150KG) meeting strangers on the walk is not great.....

They have 8 paw drive and could probably pull the van if it broke down.....

Only once had an issue when out where a Guy continued walking at me... despite asking him to stop... red warning lights on the dogs... luckily it was the 2 friendly ones... and they just knocked him over making a fuss of him.... but its an experience I would rather avoid... these days if I see someone coming when out walking (reservoir) I stop and secure them to a bench or a post or a tree.... luckily it only happens a few times a year.....

I have heated screen/seats in my T6.1 and fully retrofitted webasto with remote control and heated steering wheel too. All serve great but different purpose. Great thing about webasto is that you can pre set the time for it to start every day at certain times or just press the remote from distance to start it. Another great option with it is ventilation option instead of heating.

Which telestart did you fit? I'm tempted with my 2000STC but no idea where the loom is run to tap into it.

On a side note pointing my vent towards the windscreen sets off the alarm

Used the remote twice today - as soon as I put the kettle on for breakfast and then when 1/2 the way back from the dog walk so that the van was warm ready for us all. Can't beat it.
Never had mine set off the alarm in 6 years use.
You should be able to use the HTM100 Telestart, that is what I use for my Evo 40 and Webasto say that it will work with the latest STC models. Fitting is easy enough - Y split cable into the Multicontrol plug which is 30 cm down from the Multicontrol ( don't know how Multimeter crept in there - must be going senile :) ) itself. Place the aerial as high and clear as possible and the temp sensor at your working height ( roughly shoulder height for most people ).
