Help with getting my MFSW working

I’m having problems getting my MFSWs buttons working.
First off they are the correct T6 buttons and I made sure the airbag loon had the wheel connector plug with the 5 wires.
I’ve followed all the instructions on here and had help from Dundee Kev who’s gone through this process on his startline.
Kevin has coded it all in on the same tablet he coded in his own successfully with. And it says the coding has been accepted but none of the buttons work yet.
I’ve got the connector needed to work my pioneer stereo and that doesn’t work either.
I’ve opened up the yellow airbag plug and tested my wires and connections to the black wire on the light switch and the wire going to pin 36 on the bcm and my wires and connections are good.
The pins haven’t forced out my pin connectors on the bcm. It’s definitely pin 36 I’ve connected into.
I’ve also tested the wire to the ebox and that’s good also but wouldn’t stop the other buttons working anyway.
I’m at a loss as to what to do next.
It’s definitely like my ecu hasn’t recognised the MFSW.
Any ideas ?
Any help most appreciated cheers.

Have you got anything working on the wheel ?
Does the horn work ?
Do the buttons light up ?
Thanks for your reply.
No nothing at all.
None of the buttons light up or work and neither does the horn.
Kevin tested the horn with his tablet and it does work so the horn itself isn’t faulty.
Did think about the buttons being broken but that wouldn’t stop the horn from working.

You will need the LIN bus wire from the BMS and a IGN power feed.

I assume.... That's what I had to do on my previous van.

(As well as the right mfsw and slip ring)

Have you got an airbag loom that definitely has all five slots in the black connector populated?

[edit just seen you mention you do] :)

If no lights then concentrate on power and lin cables because somethings not right
Horn should work regardless so my guess is wrong loom or incorrectly connected wiring ?

I’ve checked the power wire that I’ve taken to the light switch black wire and I’ve checked my lin wire to the bcm and they are all good.
Kevin has checked the loom and wiring and they appear to be correct and the same as his.

Just a few cross-check ideas:

Are your buttons definitely compatible with your BCM? Early T6s need PQ25, for example.

Knowing what year and whether it’s EUR5 / EUR6 would be helpful.

It’s a late 68 plate and euro 6
The buttons came off a T6 highline steering wheel

I don’t want to lead you on a wild goose chase, so if any other members know more please do chip in!

My understanding is that the electronics platform changed from PQ25 to something else around 2016/7 and the BCM was updated at the same time. They don’t talk to each other. This was the problem I faced but the other way round.

Mine’s a very early EUR5 and I had to find a wheel from a Polo Mk6 to get the right electronics platform.

I think it might be possible to tell from the code stickers in the wheel which I think are visible when the airbag is out. From those codes it might be possible to determine year of make.

My understanding is that the horn moves from being a direct electrical connection to a CanBus command when a MFSW is installed.

Do you still have the EBay seller’s details? Worth asking them a question about what year the wheel is?

I’m beginning to wonder if this is what the problem is.
This was the listing which suggests it might be an earlier model.

Forgot to say I don’t have the wheel the buttons came off anymore so can’t check the codes unfortunately

Here’s that sticker from my first Polo wheel, shows a date of manufacture (25/7/18). Hopefully yours does too.

This was the wrong year for me. I needed earlier.

EBay seller has got back and confirmed it was off a 68 plate.
So at least I’ve ruled wrong buttons out.
