Hi from Essex

Hi all,

Just reaching out to say hello. Venturing into campervan ownership and we will hopefully be picking up our T6.1 from Spartan Campers very soon. Have owned VW's and Audi's for the past decade, and we're swapping a 2022 Tiguan R-Line for the T6. After much consideration, we're opting for a 2020 with a DSG box (150bhp). Manufacturers warranty will soon be up, so a remap will likely be on the cards later in the year or next. Family of 5 + 2 dogs, we're eager to get away for the first new nights of van life and have already seen a whole array of family camper fests to get in the calendar!

I must say, the forum has been super helpful for casual reading over the past couple of weeks, and given me lots to think about. I'm currently going through insurance quotes and the myriad of tracker/immobiliser options out on the market as the first priority. A growing list of 'wants' thereafter.

Welcome to the forum Tim.

What have you got in mind for a tracker/immobiliser? I can recommend the Meta Trak S5 Deadlock Pro, which provides both tracking and immobiliser functions.

I've not read near enough yet on where to draw a conclusion. Have been reading various threads here on it already, and have so far looked at the Ghost, Phantom and Scorpion kits. Was going to establish what the insurance companies are asking for us a minimum and then go from there (I've only so far spoken with AF). Thanks for the recommendation, I'll take a look at that.

Bizarrely, insurers aren't usually interested in immobilisers - only in trackers - and they'll specify the minimum Thatcham category required rather than a specific make/model. Cat S7 trackers are good; Cat S5 trackers are better; Cat S5+ trackers are Cat S5 trackers with remote immobilisation capability. It's very rare that Cat S5+ are specified and the Meta Trak is Cat S5 so will be acceptable in almost all cases.

How are you getting on with insurance quotations? It's hard work arranging insurance for a campervan as the online comparison websites are utterly useless. After much leg-work I ended up with Comfort Insurance (an Aviva brand), but who's best for you will depend on which market segment you fall in to and which insurers are targeting that segment.

Insurance-wise, I would strongly advise taking out an Agree Value (AV) policy rather than a standard Market Value (MV) policy, otherwise you could end up being severely out of pocket should your camper get written-off.

Good luck!

That is really helpful, thanks Bav much appreciated.

I've only reach out to Adrian Flux so far and will be targeting more tomorrow - got the useful list from the relevant thread on here. I got the sense that the online comparison route was not the best way to go with a custom vehicle. AF didn't mention whether it was based on AV or MV, they only asked for the purchase price. I'll bear this in mind for the chore tomorrow. Thanks.

Picked the van up last weekend and headed out for a couple of days straight away - plenty of learning from the first venture.

Had a solar panel fitted before picking up and have just added a tracker and secondary immobiliser. Also a brand new van battery needed within the first week of ownership.

Drives pretty well, and quite a comfortable tourer. Couple more trips booked up already and have purchased an air awning to give us a little extra space.

Not yet decided what to go for next from the growing shopping list ... Remap, rear spoiler, front and rear lights, change front splitter, rear splitter... Is going to be an expensive hobby this!

Wondering if anyone has a vcds in Essex to help remove a speed limiter from the 150 for me? Obviously happy to pay for your time and help.

Welcome mate. check out the link Bav shared and see how that works out. Was the 150 an ex rental? just wondering why the limiter...

It’s the classic ex rac! Need to get it on decent coilovers asap then basically everything is done, apart from headlight / tail light upgrades .

Welcome to the forum!

Who are you using for paint? Chuck a review on this thread when you get a minute, as its always good to know of one.

I'm in Southend with VCDS if you don't have any joy with your initial request.
Thanks!

Paint was done by a body shop in hull called pavlik, it’s not the best but by far not the worst either, could just be me being picky!

And cheers mate, really appreciate it! I’ll let you know if I don’t get a reply.

I’m in Essex where abouts are you based?
I’m in Chelmsford mate, what about you?
