High beam assist not working [Resolved]

My T6.1 is fitted with auto high beam when I push the left stalk forward the indicator with the dipped beam and an A in the middle comes up but the full beam won’t go on even when cars have passed. It still stays as I dipped beam. It’s only ever worked twice and since then I have to manually do it myself and I’m wondering what this could be?

I can not help technically.
Is it a similar system to the T6. From memory, I think the vehicle needs to reach a certain speed before the main beam switches on or after dipping for oncoming vehicles. Some road sign reflections might interfere with its operation.

Not helpful o you but I just switch my T6 Caravelle all the way and operate the headlamps main and dip beam manually. This is because the system is just inadequate on very twisty roads. It reacts to slow, does not anticipate in advance and switches on main beam after far to much delay after passing the last vehicle. I also find that the speed when main beam ignites is far to high in the countryside on dark wet twisty roads. It did not take me very long from owning it from new 2019, to never using it again. Mind you I never used the cruse control either. I have only just started using it on 20mph roads but have not progressed very far with that either. I guess that I do not want some one else driving the car when I am at the wheel. Much of the time I even manually change the gears up and down because I anticipate what is coming, auto systems are reactive, I prefer to be pro active.

I have it on the 6.1 and agree with @Kind of Blue I have it switched off as it operates terribly. Every three months I decide to give it another go and then give up after it's drilled too many other drivers between the eyes again.

I just heartily wish instead of it being "auto" on one click and "manual" on two I could configure it the other way around. It is useful on late night drives on dual carriage ways so it would be useful to have it to hand, but the way around it is I just hate sitting there knowing it's about to decide to put the lights back on and make a mistake and there is nothign I can do about it other than flash them anyway to override auto or awkwardly reach down and twiddle the headlamp mode - it's shockingly poor.

Anyway if you want to preserve do make sure that the windscreen is good and clean in the centre around the cameras and be aware that it doesn't put the lights on at town driving speeds or on well lit roads.

The times I have used it I thought it was really quick at turning on and off and it worked really well but I was trying to use it in the lanes going less than 40. I’ll try again tonight and drive over 40 and see if it turns on then.

It is and I find that the problem - a recurring pattern in my night driving is it turns on just before the car you can see looming around the corner or behind the dip comes into view - and then snaps off when it's made a mistake - so then it just looks like you're aggressively flashing, especially with LED headlights, and often get an angry flash response back. It's awful.

I seam to recall that when operating with the switch set to auto, that the high beam does not operate until achieving 40mph! More than a few of us think that too low a speed to be useful. A recent post covering something very similar, resulting in several of us declaring our dislike for the system and declining to use it. Its latency is just too slow and sometimes operates wrongly in certain conditions.

Hello so replying to this and everyone else in the chat I found out that VCDS can be used to change the speed down to lower probably more like 10 mph and I’ve been using it last night and today and on my van, it seems really quick at switching from off to on and I don’t know if that’s because I’ve got a 6.1 or maybe newer software but it actually works really good. I just never knew it was 40 mph as I was never driving over that speed that’s why I thought they didn’t work.

I do not think that it has anything to do with version of vehicle. Driving at night on awkward or country roads I believe is just to complex a problem to be solved easily. Lowering the activation mph is solving only one of the problems.

What I mean is I’ve done loads of driving last night in the dark and it worked flawlessly it didn’t flash anyone and it always worked as it should. I’ll keep using it but it seems to be working well now I just need to lower the speed so it comes on more.

If it works for you on the roads you drive etc. great, carry on. Though not every driver inconvenienced by lights, flashes back in annoyance, they may be just trying to see where they are going.

Don't forget to switch your lights on in the fog/ so many cars are driven in foggy conditions over the last few years without head lights or fog lights at the front and no lights at all at the rear! Not a problem with main beam assist but with auto lights in general. I have not done a survey but many of those vehicles are recent. I believe it people relying too much on auto systems and do not even consider the hazard. Of cause there has always been those who drive in fog without lights but compliance was getting better over the years but now it is just unbelievable just how many drivers ignore foggy conditions. They do not even know why they get the occasional flash from other concerned drivers.

Yes I agree. A lot of people do rely on the auto function. I’m wondering if it is just a software update regarding the high beam assist as it’s strange that my one works above the speed limit but others don’t it seems like it’s probably a software issue.

Have it reprogrammed for a more useful speed, Probably its intended to avoid using high beam in built up areas. Many years ago their were lots of regional variations about using headlamps in built up towns. The Mersey Tunnel used to dissuade drivers from using headlamps I recall. The other thing about the auto lights that I find irritating is the way the beam drops with speed when on dip and it makes it even more difficult so see beyond the Dipped cut off. On manual the Dipped beam cut of remains the same regardless of speed. Its just a faff, when I can pre-empt oncoming cars and dipp on s bends and other complex situations when their lights are not illuminating me but mine are lighting them up. I can see over hedges or through hedges and dipp in advance and re illuminate when it suits me.
