Home CCTV kits

I run the foscam system with the NVR recorder. Currently have 6 cameras installed with 2 more to be added when funds allow. This week its recorded the local deer eating my new fruit trees and the postman doing a hit and run on a mother and baby moorhen.

I've recently been researching CCTV in anticipation of the arrival of my van - although I've been told this week that due to lockdown and furlough, my conversion date has gone back until September:oops: Still, with scrotes knicking bikes from sheds and even setting light to cars parked on driveways, I'm feeling that a deterrent is required. I was considering Swann system but found a review on YouTube comparing this ReoLink 4 system to two others (Swann and Amcrest) and the ReoLink came out on top - as well as being cheaper. 4K 8MP cameras, continuous recording or programmable motion/IR sensing, remote viewing via Internet.Screenshot 2020-06-05 at 20.01.41.png I know what I'll be doing next weekend!

Looks something like I had in mind. It's a bit of a minefield when you start looking into it.

Swann are okay - i have had several and they generally last for around 4 years... but they are relatively cheap...

I have now moved to ring and when the swan fails i doubt i will replace it again. I like the fact of the cloud storage - even though you have to pay a subscription... I have also added a ring alarm system to my house to sublimest the traditional wired alarm...

Re three bridge, i spoke to them the other day and they said their timetable has taken a hit with the lockdown...

Hi all,

A mate has recently caught some nightime activity on his CCTV with a guy trying to get into his vehicles on the drive.

It's got me thinking maybe some CCTV might be a wise investment for my house.
Does anyone have recommendations for brands or decent kits.

The easier to use the better.Probably looking at a 3 camera system.

Cheers

Hi,
I fitted a swan system 4 camera with ability to add another 4. Works great and easy to fit so long as you can route the cables ok yourself. Had mine 5 years now and still works ok. I paid £300.
Log in on the app to check the cameras playback on the app is a bit unpredictable though.

Big T

I got the foscam PoE IP cameras and Assuming you can run the cables I would say whatever brand you choose I would recommend you go for that type of camera.

Fully agree..i moved over to POE/IP cams from an analogue system...cams are so much more versatile with their own individual configurability...if i change the cams in the future for any reason the cat6 cables I've installed will be compatible.

A couple of tricks I've used to combat spiders in the past - loose the little sun shade where possible (for example if the cam is shaded by something else or doesn't point in the direction of the sun) - as the front of the cam is then exposed and flat there isn't anything they can build their webs from. I've also used grease over the camera body, they really don't like walking on that stuff so leave the cams well alone (down side is other things sometimes stick to it and it generally needs reapplying after a year or so.

OK I live in London, but I wasn’t expecting what the camera system turned up.

In the first four months, my cameras picked up 13 different people coming into my front drive trying the car and van door handles, anytime between 1am and 5am.

They were different people, male and female and none were bothered by security lighting.

I live in a long straight residential street so they have a clear view all along the road t make sure that no one is around, and their MO seems to be going into every front drive trying door handles, as if they are looking for cash or valuables.

In m experience, always use at least one low camera as top of the head shots of hoods and caps are useless.

I bought a Hikvision system from this Forum member, AMDowney, top man.

Not only is it excellent quality kit, the price was excellent compared to elsewhere and the customer service was excellent.
10/10, I’d certainly go to him again.

Yes his deals seem good value.

Something like this would certainly tick all boxes I think.

A lot of these screen shots are of daylight hours, pretty much all the cameras out there will be fine in the daytime, but the big test is how they fare in darkness, a lot turn to black & white once the light levels drop and some drop frame rate as well which makes for ghostly images when objects are moving faster than snails pace.
Show us what the night time view is like and ask yourself if you could use the footage to find that car/person out of a line up if you had to.
As an example, a friend of mine had his van (Transit) attempted the other day, his cameras go B&W at night, he got a shot of a Range Rover dropping off the guy who tried to get into his van, but that's all you could say about it. My camera, on the front of my house, is a Sony Starvis, stays colour even with the light of the streetlamps, I caught it coming and leaving, a Blue Range Rover with a Black Roof, later that day after the footage off my camera was shown to the Police, they pulled over and arrested the driver and passenger of said Range Rover with several stolen items in the boot.

So is it the light from the street lamps keeping the camera in colour (a happy coincidence) or is the camera specifically designed to show colour at night?

I'm in full agreement re Night Footage (wonder how many people take that into account)

That night time footage is very poor isn't it.

At night it does switch to infrared and so black and white. The picture quality on the drive is pretty good though but as said in an earlier post the angle could limit the ability to pick up an ID.

Also, although totally invisible during the day the spiders webs are very visible at night so good to position in a place where it could be easily cleaned. Sometimes get a view of nothing but a perfectly formed web and a massive spider centre stage (although in reality it’s only tiny)

The Starvis cameras are designed to give colour pictures in very low light situations, claimed to be able to render colour in 0.0001lux.
The cameras do have infra red illumination where there is insufficient light to give a colour picture but the two cameras I have at the front of the house get enough light from the LED streetlights to give a pretty good colour picture at 25fps

I have three Hikvision Cameras and the 8 port NVR. NVR is a tad noisy though with the cooling fans running.
You can view the cams on your phone when its all set up using Hik-Connect app. Think there is another link for the app as Hikvision is a part of Huawei so no longer on the playstore but the below site has all the info.
This site has loads of info and a forum you can check out.

I can do the same via the Super Live Plus app on my Android phone or via internet explorer using the autonat website.

A low level camera hidden away can be the answer.. I've disabled the IR leds so it doesn't stand out, but with the streetlight illumination it doesn't need them.
