Howdens - A-Plan - KGM Policy issues

Afternoon,

Wondering if anyone has had any similar issues getting insurance?

Gone to renew my policy with A-Plan and have been advised that the vehicle would have a driveway clause with the vehicle only being insured on our drive if we are at home.

When asked for further clarity on it and gave a few 'what ifs' they have declined to offer their insurance any further...

Disappointed is an understatement as I've now got to rush around to find a new policy.

Anyone had anything similar happen?

what APLAN branch did you call?

as they are all separate.

try the Thatcham branch - they are the camper specialist.

That’s who I spoke with Dell,

They found me an alternative in the end for an additional £150.

What I struggle to understand is how trying to understand an insurance clause is grounds for KGM to withdraw their quote. After all, insurance is an area where devil is in the detail and don’t want to fall foul of being uninsured because we’ve left the van at the pub for example…

maybe try my local one? Tooting London.

see if you get the same back?

but as APLAN/HOWDEN is a broker - im assuming its the actual ins company thats moaning.

the insurance minefield just gets more and more complex every year. . . .

As it’s feedback from the underwriter I’d assume branch won’t have an affect on the outcome.

Do believe it’s grounds for a complaint to the ombudsman though.

We’ve got to have insurance BUT don’t ask questions about the policy as you’ll be deemed not worth the hassle of a policy…

I’m with the same broker / underwriter for two cars. One has to be garaged if parked overnight at home (which it normally is). That said there have been times it was left outside due to me using the garage for a DIY project. Something to consider.

I think they are getting more and more pedantic about avoiding payouts. I read something recently about the number of claims being declined due to undeclared modifications, some of which can be quite trivial.

Small update on this.

Howdens rang apologising for the issues and have managed to sort an almost matching plan that included parking on the street overnight for the same premium. Not that we need it, 99.9% of the time it’s parked on our drive but resolves the issue.

They did say that if something were to happen and the car was not parked with us overnight the case would be taken on its own merit. BUT i’ve never heard of any insurance companies ‘doing you a solid’ when it comes to paying out so take a statement like that with a pinch of salt.

Worth considering so you don’t get caught out.
