Leaking rear door

Just back from a camping trip with the family and had a downpour last night. Woke to find everything in the back corner ‘wardrobe’ cupboard wet. Have looked everywhere for the source of the leak and nothing super obvious. The only thing that looks like a culprit is the rear curtain rail seems to push the rear door seal up and create a break in the seal at each end, and looks like water might be dripping in at each side… has anyone else seen a similar problem?? Our van is a camperking with a tailgate.
Thanks in advance!!!

We’ve only had the van 2 months and I guess the weather has been relatively good during that time so maybe we wouldn’t have seen it. I’m guessing the solution is to take the curtain rails off and shorten slightly and reposition so they don’t interfere with the seal - seems like a basic thing that should never have been allowed Tom happen…

Oh, an probably replace the seal as it looks like the rails have been pushing against them for a while (presumably since new, the van is 5 years old but new to us) so has caused dents in them

I recently had this same issue on both sides.

Turned out the lining had been taken over the seal and was acting like a sponge when it rained.

My curtain rail also pushes on the seal but doesn’t let water in.

View attachment 207610how did you resolve this? I've got possibly a similar issue. My leak seems to be coming from van side of seal into the van and running down the sodes behind the cloth. I was thinking the leak may be coming from the top recess area near the hinges and seal but now I'm not sure

Yes, resolved!

When I got home I re trimmed all the lining to the natural lines of the inside of the van up to the seal.

No more water coming in since then!

I would say pull your seals off and see if there’s lining under them. Also they could be loose so might need pinching with some pliers to get a tight seal.

What did you put the seal back on with? Did it pull off easily enough without damaging it?

It's just a grip seal, just work it off gently and don't rush. If it falls off too easily will need tightening as mentioned. Should go back on with a firm thump of the palm of your hand.

These seals are designed to go over the welded join so they have a U shape with a continuous metal clip to give it grip inside the rubber.

I thought I'd resurrect this thread, as we've had our T5.1 for a few weeks now, but have had other jobs going on, I just started with sorting out some rust around the doors yesterday and discovered that the carpeting on the very bottom edge to the barn doors was soaking wet after a downpour yesterday it was taken down too far I think as I could see an impression where it had been shut in the door seal on both doors and has most likely been like this for years since the conversion which had caused some really bad rust in one corner which I part sorted yesterday with rubbing it down and applying Neutarust 661 and will be painting it today, I have trimmed the stretch carpet back

also, there is a 1" or so gap in the door seal in the middle where it's supposed to push together from my understanding there should be a small gap for drainage, not a gaping one am I correct on this? as my other vans of different makes in the past and my works Citroen van doesn't have a gap at all, would I be wasting my time to remove it today and attempt to get a better fit just trying to avoid the cost of buying an entire new seal as need to replace the upright seal on the rear door as that has knick and cut which has been letting in a small amount of moisture and some idiot has cut the door seal a few inches down from the top, as I'm already replacing the driver-side inner door seal today as it's been split and resulted in rusting on the lower edge,

Honestly I'm bewildered why the issues I have mentioned people just don't get sorted asap to avoid problems!!

No gap on mine. Where it abuts is tight and I removed it to carpet line (trimmed at the pressed edge). I've no idea how yours has lost an inch or why there'd need to be a small gap for drainage... unless it's a mobile kiII room o_O

As is the way with our vans it's likely the best course to get new seals all round and have it sorted. Sounds like it needs it and it'd be peace of mind for you.

Hope it works out okay

Has the rear seal shrunk ? Try taking the lower half off and stretching it slightly while knocking it back on .
Are the doors full of water ?

The doors aren't full of water, I did think about trying to stretch it out, but honestly no idea same as why some bright spark decided to slice the middle door seal with a Stanley knife either, all causing water ingress to a point, I did pressure wash the van last week and I thought the pw might have been too much but since found out why I'm getting water in.

Thanks for this, we are already a few grand in with making upgrades and getting it sorted, the van needs the rear doors spraying edges scraped and not sorted to a high standard just bodged with touch paint and a 1/4" brush by the looks of it and hinges chipped also the driver's side panel where the previous owner damaged the paint around the Ehu and it's completely fractured on one side and lifted, so may as well go the whole hog,

Despite all of the above, the van is solid and has been well looked after over the years, I do suspect the last owner a young lad was just too lazy and cash-strapped to get on top of things, I saw a 13-plate the other day same year as ours and it sounded like chitty-chitty Bang-bang and looked rough as badgers backside, I have seen side panels and doors with really bad rust, so I keep telling myself we ain't done too bad

slice the middle door seal with a Stanley knife eithe
If you mean the slider side door and the gap is at the bottom it's to ensure the bottom slider roller pocket drains - it's a well known thing that otherwise rain gets in there and rusts the heck out of the rollers and the bodywork they run on.

You should have gone to Specsavers :D I made no mention of the side loading door, it is the rear door seal, it pushed together yesterday so all good.

I read "middle door" as the door in the middle - hence the slider...

Glad it's sorted
