Just had a brand new van converted and the log book says Motor Caravan

I though it would say Camper van

How many diffrent variations can you have on a log book, i know of 1 other pannel van with windows

Aslo if my lag book says motor caravan does this mean I can use the same speed limits as cars and not vans

Thanks

It’s correct. It’s one of the categories used by the DVLA. The Motor Caravan category is a catch all description that covers campervans, motorhomes and RVs with permanent facilities for sleeping, cooking and washing. Speed limits are as per cars.

Mine is Motor Caravan on the V5 - was changed a little while after conversion, and I can confirm I haven’t received any speeding tickets despite being at car speeds when passing fixed or temporary cameras. Had the van three years now.

How do the speed cameras tell the difference between a van and a camper van ?
They don't. Errant NIPs are issued for converted campervans that are recorded as 'van with windows' on the V5.

That sound perfect

Would i benefit from cheeper insurance?
Probably not. Premiums are determined by the risk insured and will vary according to vehicle value, main and named driver’s age, experience and history, where kept, use and performance in the main.

Are you saying you can still get a ticket doing 60mph on a dual carriage way as a motor caraven ?
Yes, if it has 'van with windows' on the V5. Not if it has 'motor caravan' on the V5.

Not quite correct. The cameras mistakenly go off the M1, N1 taxation class, so N1s get the lower speed limits whereas M1s get the higher. If your N1 van qualifies to the DVLA regs then you can appeal the incorrect NIPs.

Edit due to typos pointed out below.

My taxation class is disabled, which must really confuse matters.

This is old ground, but as we know speed limits are determined by vehicle  type as determined under Con and Use regs 1986. It is not determined by any notional class or descriptor the DVLA assign. Speed limits are determined by primary legislation signed off in parliament, and not the DVLA.

Of course some forces - but far from all - rely on the DVLA descriptor for their largely automated ticketing system, but this is incorrect and has been successfully challenged at both the process stage and in court.
