LPG TSi - MPG

I spoke to anLPG installer today & they advise that they can fit either a Prins or BRC system to my 150bhp TSi. They advise there is little difference between the two systems, and that both companies are part of the same group.

The BRC system is approx £300 cheaper.

Has anyone experience of the BRC system on a T6 or other vehicle. Should I pay the extra £300 for PRINS?

Any advice would be appreciated

Hi Doug,
You should be fine I would think. Speak with the guru Bruce at Alternatech (01962676143), and they can do the Prins LPG conversion, as well as recalibrate it to run with your remap. As long as your remap isn't running silly boost levels, you'll be fine on the standard LPG kit and injectors. My Pendle map runs very sensible boost so runs like a dream.
I only used Bruce for the recalibration, after having had my conversion done by Colin at Oxford autogas. I only found out about Bruce afterwards, otherwise for ease I might have had Bruce do it all.
Good luck, you won't regret it, especially not the first time you fill up and it's under £30 lol

Hi Euan,
My van goes to Bruce at Alternatech 15th February after your recommendation for lpg conversion. When you got your lpg installation did it not run correctly? as you then went to Bruce for work to be done on the lpg?
I was told by another installer my van wouldn’t run on the standard t6 tsi kit as the injectors aren’t up to the job. Also what size tank did You have fitted? .These lpg conversations aren’t cheap so want to make sure this van actually runs correctly on 300hp and doesn’t hesitate or stutter.Any information would be good.

Btw piston heads have asked my to do write up on my van for them to publish, as not many people are aware of this monster of a van

Is there much involved in the PRINS LPG re-calibration following a remap? If the injectors are OK, isn't it just a case of ensuring that the LPG feed can provide the required pressure to keep up with the remap requirements? In other words, can it be done by any LPG installer, because Alternatech are a long way from Lancashire.

Mine needs a service, so I'll be asking anyway (in Warrington), and I'm not quite financially ready for the remap yet. Besides, I want to fit a K&N airfilter first.

I have an 85 litre toroidal tank in place of the spare wheel. I believe Euan had to make do with a smaller one becuase his van was lowered when it was converted and there was a ground clearance issue. The most I've ever topped mine up with is 67 litres.

Hi,
Sorry for late reply.
Injectors fine as standard with the Pendle map. Apparently it's all about the boost, and the Pendle map was nowhere near the injector limits. Done 20,000 miles+ on LPG running the 300bhp map, runs beautifully.
Only took it to Bruce after the install as I didn't know I could map it before the LPG conversion. Learned about Bruce afterwards, and he did the recalibration of the LPG system once I had the remap done. If I did it again, I'd get it all done in one place with Bruce.
Once mapped, I ran the van on petrol until Bruce had worked his magic. Now I only fill up the petrol tank about every 20 tanks of LPG (6000+ miles.
Doing 300+ miles on a ~£35-40 fill. Love it. No brainer, and so much nicer to drive than diesel.

Cheers for

Cheers for that, I’ve held off the article on my van until after the lpg conversion.
Not many people are aware VW did a petrol van, and the press it has got due to mpg is not good.
If the lpg works out then why wouldn’t anyone want a 300+HP van with 40mpg (equivalent) that’s super quiet inside??
My van was thousands cheaper than a diesel so the lpg is within budget.

I routinely get a minimum of 25mpg (measured and with less than 1% variation on the Speedo), and on a run get 28-32mpg. My local LPG is 52ppl, so at *least* 2.5x cheaper than the cheapest petrol, so by my calcs I'm getting 60+mpg equivalent, way better than even a TDi 102 driven like miss daisy. Cleaner for the environment and atmosphere too.
Even hammering it, it holds high teens to the gallon. Absolute no brainer. Anyone who runs one on petrol must have very deep pockets!!!

When I bought my van it was so fast I guessed it must have been mapped but I have no evidence.
My son and me did a 0-60. The standard 150 van is supposed to it in 11 seconds, mine did it in 6.8!
I’ve no idea where it was mapped but the best mpg I get is 24mpg. The 20” alloys have decreased it by about 40 miles per tank. My Speedo is out cos of the alloys so I’ve gone by an app not the dash.
No one can run these vans without lpg, it’s just to expensive.

Agree.
I'm on 20s too, 275/40s Fulda Sport controls. Best noise, grip and economy rated tyres I could find in 20s. Previous tyres I had on were about 5mpg worse, couldn't believe the difference. Suggest these Fuldas next time you have to change. Have a spare brand new one for sale too I'm willing to sell for a snip ;)

Hi Guys
This is exactly my plan this year. Just need to source the van, which leads me to my question.

150 bhp TSI only comes with manual box, whereas 200 bhp comes with DSG. As both engines can be Pendle mapped the same with PRINS, would this end goal of TSI/PRINS/300bhp map be fine on a 2wd manual gearbox? I'd love the DSG, but with some of my other 'wants' and having to buy secondhand due to the TSI being cut (& budget...), I don't want to limit my options too much. I'm not likely to be doing 0-60 trials, its more the torque that appeals with the map, but I like the sound of the LPG cost.

Current T4 is diesel, but an EU6 diesel doesn't really suit as a lot of my trips are short so i'll likely have loads of regens using much fuel. It's such a mine field, and as i've had my current van for 13 years, and likely to have the newer one a long time, it's a decision I need to get right.

Any issues insuring the beast Euan?

Many thanks

I’ve done 12000 miles in mine now with no issues.
My map is undetectable with VW and so I still have a VW warranty.
My van was mapped before so I cannot comment on standard, most of my power it higher in rev range.
Mine is slightly restricted in first, 2nd and 3rd is just mad.
I had more torque with my old 174 diesel.

22000 in on the LPG all while running the 300bhp map with zero issues. Love it.

Note that *all* maps are detectable by any decent technician, so your warranty is only as good as the team looking at any problems. The remap would affect engine and drivetrain components if they were to find the map, but you could always have it removed if you needed to take it in, and hope they don't see the data traces.

Can't comment on manual clutch strength, but DSG is a must for me, and is seemless with the map. Ask Pendle directly, he's always honest and will tell you if it will cope. Suspect it will as they're smart about when the torque and power are delivered, unlike cheap maps.

Hi All

sorry to be such a newbie on this
I am looking for a van and want to use it as a daily commute for 120 miles a day.
What is the best way round this?
Fit a lpg and get it remapped or remap and then lpg?

what price has people paid for both
Lpg fitting and spare wheel tank
Remapping?

thanks for your patience and just need to plan ahead!

willing to travel to any recommended installers also? Who do you recommend? Is there anybody who does both at once?

Cheers

lee

Hi Lee,
You're looking at about £2.5k for it all done, remapped and LPG converted and calibrated.
I'd get a Pendle remap as I know it runs beautifully on standard injectors and parts, and is tried and tested.
Get the remap done first, then the LPG conversion. Get the conversion done by a specialist like Bruce (mentioned in this thread), as converters are NOT all equal, plenty of cowboy operations about. Prins approved are better than norm, but even those will have good and not so good ones.

Bruce at Alternatech (01962676143) mine was £2200 all in. He’s great to deal with.
Mine is a 63l tank but I can only get 59l in it. Filler is where the adblue goes so nice and hidden.

Thanks for the response so quick
Looking forward to doing this potentially, seems the way ahead to cut the costs down in motoring! thanks for the solid advice. Ler

Did that include remapping? I believe I was the first to use Bruce for the recalibration to mapping, and he didn't do remapping for the T6 when I did it? Presume £2200 is all in for the LPG conversion..?
Either way, I'd only use a Pendle remap anyway, but good to know.
Lee - get it done, it's about £30 per 300 miles, about as cheap as combustion motoring goes, let alone in a Transporter! Much cheaper,nd cleaner, and nicer to drive than the TDI's too!

No that was just lpg conversion and make lpg run on my remapped van.
Remapping is about £500 I’m guessing??
Mine was already done before I bought it , no idea who.

I had a quick word with Pendle HQ last Friday, and asked whether there was anything worth doing to my van before a remap. I thought that perhaps a K&N airfilter might be beneficial, but no. The only thing I was told, was to fit new spark plugs, with the recomendation that they should be changed every 10k miles anyway. Now I've never changed mine (unless they were done at the first, interim, service?), and I've now done over 20k miles.
Anyway, while I was looking online for what plugs are needed (I've still not verified that by the way), I noticed that NGK do some dedicated LPG spark plugs.
Has anyone any knowledge of using these plugs in their LPG vehicle?

So I’ve had the 300ish hp TSI lpg converted about 10,000 miles ago.
£29 to fill lpg tank (53ppl) did 270 miles today on that tank.
Averages generally between 230and 255 miles depending how and where I drive.

Best mod ever!

Its something I'm thinking about but other stuff taking priorities at the minute.
How long will it take to pay for its self at that price/mileage do you know?
