Main Fuse for vehicle battery?

You need to remove the battery and get access to the E box underneath it. There are some very large fuses in the there, you will have blown at least one of them. You have probably also damaged one or more ECUs.

Definitely need to check state of the battery with a voltmeter - it may be completely knackered.
For jump leads to melt, we are talking lots of current. There isn’t a fuse of that capacity in the T6 system to my knowledge, so it is more likely that something has melted in the electrics.
I would follow the wires through from the +ve terminal looking for damage.
To be honest though, you need an experienced vehicle electrician here.

Pete, your we’re correct the battery cooked itself.

So I worked out what happened. I bought two new batteries one for the defender and one for the T6. I connected the defender to its new battery using the jump leads and started it just to move it 10m out of the way of the T6 So I could get the T6 onto the light. I then did the same with the T6 battery to unlatch the gears into neutral to push it back in to the light so I could see what I was doing To re install the new battery ( the old one is with the batty company to see if they can wake it up).
The problem being the terminals of the VW and Defender batteries are The opposite way around and I didn’t register that and just popped the leads on to the new T6 battery In the same way I did the defender, but this time on the dark.
Luckily for me the only damage was the new battery which is fried and some slightly melted jump lead handles!!

Thanks for your help - at least I now know where the fuses are

This is where you need a Noco Jump Starter pack with reverse polarity protection!

I’d go and put the lottery on if I were you @Rayclash. It’s your lucky day :D

I know! Phew - i was thinking £5000 at least. Still need to check everything out before any long trips to Norway :)-))), the battery was showing 14.7 volts but when i tried to draw current it didn't deliver any. Its one of those auto start batteries - I've not used one of those before and i dont know what the difference is. Oh well it lasted all of 6 hrs in my possession. Another one on its way today (;-)), I think a Jump starter pack is indeed a good idea. I'll take it for a spin up to the beach at the weekend.

Ah, that make sense now. I though you had removed the battery from the van and connected the new one by jump leads only. It explanis why it was smoking.
Providing you didn't leave it on too long, you should of only distroyed both batteries.
