Mileage verification

I would prefer to buy from a recommended dealer, but if I went privately, my main concern would be how to verify the mileage. I gather that there are ways of clocking these vehicles, even with all the digital safeguards that apparently should prevent it. Is there any way to check to see if the mileage on the dashboard is genuine? Thanks

I'm guessing over a period of time MOT and service history would tracking the mileage to double check over for any discrepancies? Tricky but are private sellers doing this over say small independent garages?? Are recommended dealers safe from buying 2nd hand stock?

Agree. I would have thought a rogue commercial operation would be far more likely to be involved with clocking than a joe public private seller.

Yeah, I guess you need a certain level of knowledge and software to actually be able to get into the depths of the system and tamper with it

Although the kit to do so isn't that expensive from the likes of aliexpress ifnyoumhave the knowledge.

There's probably no way to guarantee it. You can only stack the odds in your favour by checking the service history from a reputable garage and the MOT history with the DVLA.

this post had me thinking as in the process of selling my T5 and had me questioning how can I prove my mileage is real.. I have all the previous MOTs and then my services logged in the book as well as other repairs etc which lucky the garages I use log the mileage and dated so with all the documents you can piece together but this won’t always be the case for other vehicles.. I guess condition of the van could reflect more on a high mileage if on the clock low?

If they let you plug in a code scanner, you can check the gearbox's mileage. They will differ from the clocks slightly, but in the same region. Less likely to have been fiddled with.
