My first VW was kind of bought by accident, or rather, bought for someone else who then didn't want it!! So, as I was about to start building my house, it was decided that my beloved Mk1 XR2 had to go and I would run.......a mk1 polo 895cc with a 105k on the clock! I'd bought it off a mate for £150 with the plan that my wife's sister would have it, typically, "she didn't like it". This car served me well....even with a few hiccups along the way...... not in any particular order.....one monday morning the release bearing slipped off the fork so I had to drive clutchless for a week until I could drop the box out, my wife to be kindly helped me lift the box back in.... Bless! Then one friday morning I got to the top of our cul-de-sac and she stopped. Gave her a spin over, no compression!! Belt stripped!! Got dear old ma ma to run me to work, we towed it in at lunchtime, I popped a belt on it at four o'clock bike chain style and drove her home!! This one always makes me smile, I was following a mate of mine in his big mercedes van and decided that "Geraldine" could have him down the hill by the golf course!! and she did! but.....I thought i'd killed her when I looked back in the rear view!! sooooo much blue smoke!! anyhoo...she seemed ok? I think I'd maybe just topped the oil up the day before, maybe a drop too much? To be honest, she swined oil, in the entire time I owned her, i never changed the filter because she was always on clean oil I topped her up that often!! It had 105k on it when I got it, it had 155k on four years later when I got rid of her! I'd spent the usual on her, plugs, points, air filter, brakes, tyres and exhausts but my £150 investment still returned me £75 when I sold her to a bloke for spares. Definitely, definitely, the best value motoring I've ever had....
