Forgive the daft question, We are hoping to buy our first converted van soon, and hoping to findout about gas for the van, specifically where and how do you get it ?
Do you get a pre-filled canister, do you fill them yourselves ?
Is there anything else we shoukd know about having gas in the van ?
Thanks in advance

They are usually 907 canisters that you exchange when empty for a full one but you can get external gas tanks under the van that you can refill with LPG at some service stations.

There's the refill price (£48 or 37, as above, but have a look locally) but there's also an additional charge if you don't already have a bottle to exchange.

If one doesn't come with the van (and it really should with a new conversion), look on ebay/facebook/gumtree for an empty 907 near you that you can then exchange for full. The condition doesn't matter, as you will be exchanging for a properly checked and filled 907.

But make sure you have the screw in handle/cap as well, or you can buy them from Halfords (I think) or camping shops.

Yeah. I only posted that link as an example of what the bottle looks like.

thanks for the replies. Couple more questions. Are propane and butane interchangeable or can you only use one?
Are suppliers common?
On average, how long does a tank last ?

You can't get propane in a 907 canister. It's likely the gas storage space in your van will only take a 907 so that rules propane out. If you did change it you'd need to change the regulator on the connection too.

How long does it last - how long is a piece of string. Depends on how much cooking you do in the van.

So the gas canister will contain butane ? I’m guessing these are readily available ? Is there a database or app with all the suppliers ?

John Drake,

If you find that your not getting on with gas naked flame cookers rings what ever their is an alternative type that runs on diesel and vents fumes and combustion moisture out side via an exhaust. These are not cheep however but do have other benefits other than just venting CO outside the living space, they often come or can be specified with a bower lid that circulates warm air around the living space. I guess your van is specced out or already completed and also may have internal heating installed so it may not interest you but Wallas Cookers produce Diesel Hobs and Cookers including or without ovens for Boats, Campers and Cottages. I have used one for years and really rate them.

Will they accept an empty CG 907 against a full LG 007?
That I haven't asked. Guessing not but could try?

I have 2 blue (now empty) and bought 2 yellow so haven't needed to try that.

Our conversion didn’t come with a gas bottle but was designed or rather fitted out to take a Calor 3.9 propane gas bottle. We use propane which I believe is better performing in cold temps. These were withdrawn from circulation a year or so back but then I believe they started selling them again. Hopefully a refill will be in stock somewhere when we need it but I wouldn’t recommend going down this route if you have a choice, they were always difficult to find even before they stopped selling them!
