If its the tailgate I think it's the child lock switch
I don’t think that’s the original location for whatever it is, judging by the cable tie.
On my T6.1 the internal tailgate switch is black plastic on the inside. There are white plastic components on the latch at the bottom of the tailgate, and some on the wiper motor.
What features do you have? Wipers? Electric latching, electric stays?

Blummun well spotted re the black cable tie. Think I was a bit distracted by the DODO box!
Hi that’s were the part was (zip tied) when i removed the board of the tailgate after looking around in the tailgate but cannot see where this dhould go

Think I may be slightly late, but I’ve just opened my tailgate cover;
Mine is a 2018 model year Highline Kombi with, I think it’s referred to as, tailgate power latching.
Hope they’re of some use in confirming parts?

Good team effort - thats why I like this forum!! 
So we know what the plug on the end of the lead is, but what does the socket look like? Another user has clearly pulled this off at some point and cable tied it away. Why? Is there some issue with the power latching that needs to be resolved?
I found a part number and this is what came up i also found the connector or the plug thing in a hole on the frame no wire though
This is becoming more & more curious;
That part number and the angled/tapered section all now align with the new replacement part that you originally found and was told wouldn’t fit.
Maybe you could sign up to be a VIP member. Then you’d gain access to various VW schematics.
Also, @Pauly may be able to provide the build list for your VIN number.
This may help guide you to what parts your van came with and should have?

If need me to pull panel off tailgate for further part info/pics let me know, as I’m curious as to why there seems to be different parts on vans of similar age.
Maybe the two things do something slightly different; power latching vs manual etc?
Hopefully someone will happen along with the info?!?
