P & O Ferries

Just another vile example of a faceless company with owners in a different country that give zero f@%ks about the long term loyalty of their staff and more proof that workers in many of these businesses are just a number that can be swiped off the board at the click of a button and replaced with cheaper labour to 'apparently' cut costs, thus saving the business, which is total crap because their parent company paid out £250 million in dividends, whist at the same time held their hands out to the British public and received £10 million pounds in furlough money, as did hundreds of other companies. Some deserving, some definitely not, but who cares, it's only public money and the government throw it around like confetti.

This isn't new and it won't be the last time we see this kind of heartless firing and re-hiring until someone in this country grows a pair and slams the door on these kind of practices. Alas, it will be old news by next month, when the next scandal or disaster is more appealing to the press.

As for the growing trend for people to start off movements to shun these companies for one reason or another, sadly we live in a society where price talks and the general public will opt for the cheaper route almost every time, conveniently forgetting these stories and the lives these companies have turned upside down on a Zoom call by an expressionless company man in a suit, reading a pre-written script, pretending to care, whist insisting these poor people sign away their lives and rights by the end of the month or they get nothing basically. I'm surprised he didn't have the terms and conditions speeding across the bottom of the screen at a pace that makes it unreadable like in the adverts.

It would have been less painful to do it by text message or email.

Rant over.
Nailed it , I have been self employed all my life I could say pahh it don’t effect me ext but I detest the lack of respect shown to the people who have kept that company afloat. P&O have shown themselves to be utterly egregious shysters who deserves to be sunk by our wallets. Boycott them ,this is a slippery slope companies up and down the uk will be watching this like hawks ready to do the same if they get away with this .

I don’t gamble but a fiver says they get away with it!

They will, but only because of other distractions they (and others) can use to their advantages, but the tide is slowly turning between the public and countries/elite that treat people with total contempt.

I'm not getting drawn into a debate around certain subjects, because I have strong opinions on being treated like a mug, but the time will come sooner than people think and the British public won't be swayed by PR BS anymore I hope. The last few years has shown that some people, companies and countries think they can do as they please without consequences, but it's been pushed too far in my opinion and I can already see pushback that's biting.

I do hope the pushback gets some traction

From the BBC site;

Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng has also written to the ferry operator's chief executive demanding answers to P&O Ferries' handling of the redundancies.

Mr Kwarteng's letter to its boss Peter Hebblethwaite says the company "appears to have failed" to follow the correct process for making large-scale redundancies, which would include consulting with unions and staff representatives and notifying him through the Insolvency Service and the Redundancy Payment Service.

The letter says failure to notify is "a criminal offence and can lead to an unlimited fine".

Let’s see if anything comes of this. P&O must know this so, maybe it is a last ditch attempt for survival before insolvency.

The reply will go something like:

Dear Minister for Stating the Bleedin Obvious,

We recognise that we didn’t follow the rules and we budgeted for that by offering enhanced severance terms. Accept them or the offer comes off the table.

Whack us with a fine and we will “phoenix” the operation. While we are doing that, you will appreciate better what it is to be an island!

We will allow you a week of posturing and telling people how firm you are being…..after that “Up Yours!”

Love from the Dubai owners

They won't do it but they should nationalise the entire operation & then sell it off.

I know there'll be rules & reasons not to do so but honestly, the entire transport infrastructure of the UK is a mess. Meanwhile, billions wasted on vanity projects....

These companies make me puke. I stopped buying Cadburys when they said they would keep Bournville village and factory running. Within a month had shut down, Nestle coffee the same, still dealing with Russia. Used to use P and O. Am with others vote with your wallet.

Well no reply from P&O about my cancellation so may have to chase via visa soon, 1 booking has been and gone and I’m not going abroad this year now with things as they are.
They really are caustic with everyone.

Apparently, P & O are now trying to pay their agency workers even less than they signed on for in the first instance. Cheeky b'stards.

I saw that headline but didn’t read the story. Given that they have every type of inspection going being thrown at them, I assume that they just within the law in what they are proposing. My nine year old reckons they’re going to fold! Unfortunately, I reckon they’ll get away with it.
