Permission To Replace Wheels And Tyres

After much complementation and advice on this forum I've agreed that the diamond cut polished alloys are not the way forward in terms of longevity and wear.
I have 18' black wheels on my Mini and took one off to put it up against the silver - didn't like that look, not for me.

So - has anyone opted for Graphite/ Gun metal on a silver van?

I'm loathed just to go for Silver alloys on a silver van - so looking for some type of colour offset.

I would go for the diamond cut still and sort out the wigglers if and when they appear, I'm 61 and raised in an era where the only cars that had black wheels were fleet ones that had had their wheel trims stolen.

Hello again!
I can't get the correct load rated wheels that we 'both' like in 19"
Therefore I have to either go for 20" and worry about the ride but have an awesome looking van or go safe with 18".

This is for my camper conversion, I'm not planning on lowering it but want to make sure I'm not feeling every bump in the road.
I also don't want to expose every rattle the van 'potentially' has.

Penny for your thoughts

I think its a subjective thing, some people will swear the ride is fine on 20's others will say the opposite. The fella i bought my van from originally had it on 20s...but said he didn't like the ride so dropped to 19's and said it improved the ride.

There are so many variables with suspension, tyres, use (loaded/unloaded) and personal preference of ride. i think the safe bet will be 18's the more risky but cooler looking will be 20s.

20" wheels definitely look cool on a slammed van, they can look cool on a slammed camper with an Hilo or Stealth roof but if we're entirely honest they don't look quite so cool on a camper with a normal pop top riding on stock suspension.

I say this as a camper van owner with an upturned bath tub type pop top.

As I said earlier in the thread I've gone with 18" wheels in an effort to make the van handle like a hot hatch rather than simply look like it should handle, the van rides on B14s and has H&R arbs, ironically these mods have left me with a van that goes flat through bends but with an underslung water tank barely above the road surface so plenty of excitement.

I put these pictures on a recent underslung water tank thread but if I was really bothered the tank could go and use an internal tank under the sink instead to drop the van a tad more.

I wasn't able to find a suitable load rated wheel in 19", after speaking with a few people I decided to go with 20" on standard suspension for the moment - I plan to upgrade the suspension later in the year.
I went with these in the end;

Thanks for all the advice guys!

I’m going through the same dilemma 18 19 or 20 inch wheels on my T6 . It’s white and I’m black packing it. These wheels look nice. If you have any photos when fitted on standard suspension would appreciate. I might go with the sport line style and fit a handling kit or alternative.

I have a DSG box and I’m concerned about changing the gear ratios. Do you know if the 20s with 235 tyres will keep the same diameter ? ..or anybody else worked it out?

Hi, willtheyfit.com will do the calculations for you ref diameter etc. Just plug your current numbers in and the numbers that you might change to and it will give you the answer.

Thanks #ChrisR.
#Ollie I like those wheels how did you get on with them in the end ?
I’m still collating my thoughts. Had the first trip over 10 minutes only yesterday and my mind still isn’t made up. I’ll respond later with detailed thoughts.

So I opted for the Super Metal 20" with 275/40 recommended tyres. The wheels are spot on and look great.
I've reduced the pressures from 40 to 36psi at the front and this has greatly improved the ride, however my fuel economy has taken a serious hit - as has the power as with 7% extra wheel diameter she's not quite as nimble.
Fuel economy from early 40's to mid to high 30's now.

I have the Koni shocks fitted from Steve and these have greatly improved the ride.
However, most I spoke to recommended the 275 tyre - 'my personal unprofessional' opinion is this tyre is too big for the front. There's no real rubbing to worry about on steering lock, however the rolling resistance is high and the tyre sticks out from the wheel arch - so any major bumps mean rubbing on the wheel arch.

With all that, I'm very happy with the stance and look though. I will do some thorough investigation on options for the front tyres and get them changed. I think this will also fail an MoT anyway.

I bought the Leighton vans LV1 s in gloss black. They are 20” and VCA approved. They look good but the suspension is standard. The van sits too high imo. Maybe plus 80 mm wheelarch gap . As time passes I’m liking the stance more but gave in and bought the -40/40 Cobra kit that LV sell. Waiting for it to arrive along with a “sportline” spoiler and trapy side bars. I also bought a lower splitter from Transporter HQ. Will fit it all next week. Some comments ......the outer diameter leads to a -1.9% speedo error compared to the VW sportLine 18” wheels . Obviously this affects the MPG readout significantly. The reality may be different . I will need to check on Willitfit.com to compare to the Circumferences . As far as the handling I feel no negative affects of potholes. In fact the bigger wheels may be marginally better. That’s not a surprise as bigger wheels roll better even thought there is less thickness of tyre. I’d say the van does not feel as nimble in terms of acceleration, ...it’s an opinion and not timed so can’t be sure. ..my experience .

Really interesting observations @Brearz
I hadn’t thought about the MPG figures being effected by the change in tyre circumstances.

I checked the Speedo and it must be calibrated to the largest Sportline 18 inch wheels VW sell. Will it fit.com suggested a 2 % underead on the speedo. I checked it this morning with a GPS speedo app and it’s bang on 2% error. So I’m actually going faster , further , more mpg (2%) so need also to be wary of speed cameras

Don't know if you have sorted yourself out with wheels yet but I would go for as few spokes as possible.
I had a Citroen C5 many years ago which had spoked alloys. Lovely to look at but a pain in the arse when they needed cleaning.
Just a thought.
