Ply lining/build advice

Hi all,

Have lost many hours reading all the great content on the forum but now need some more specific help.
We have just bought ourselves a 2016 Kombi LWB and are loving it so far, first Transporter and has not disappointed.

It will be used for work most of the time so needs some storage built into the rear (basically a platform/shelf at waist height and a couple of compartments below and a bulkhead to divide the space from the rear seats to the back The shelf will hold a toolbox and a couple of lighter sets of drawers with space in front as a bit of a workbench/area.

Currently it has the soft rubber floor in the back which we quite like, so my main questions are;

Will it be best to remove the rubber floor and replace with ply so its easier to build up from ?

Has anyone kept the rubber floor when fitting out or even put ply on top to build from?

I have many more follow on questions but need to start somewhere!
Hope my description made sense.
We are confident in making it ourselves but new to vans!

Thanks for reading

I think if you want to screw anything to the floor then you would be better having plywood there to screw it to. Most of my vans have had ply floors which makes it easier to build racking in but my last van had a plastic liner and I used a modular racking system instead as I liked the plastic floor
