anyone replaced the OEM rear rubbery type floor in their swb Kombi? As much as i don't mind it, every time i tie down my motorbike, it leaves indentations in the floor which take forever to return to normal.

I want a firmer surface ( maybe plywood & carpet) but is this possible & what would i need to look out for if a want to change, anyone got pics of theirs as ideas?

thanks

Plywood and a vinyl like Altro or similar might be better than carpet if you are carrying a motorbikeIMG_1024.JPGIMG_1025.JPG

Thanks,

mid the floor easy enough to take out and replace? Is 12 or 18mm best thickness? I know there have been issues with some thicknesses for step etc, don’t want to be replacing things that I done need to..
How thick is the oem floor?

To replace the rubber load mat, you want a 12mm ply floor. 6 or 9mm sections of ply to baton out the gaps between the ridges in the metal floor (it's somewhere between the two). Have a search online/on here. I used 6mm ply batons, Harrison's gold (3mm) insulation, then a 12mm ply floor. Loads of methods online. If you're only worry is marking the rubber floor, I'd still try spreading the weight of the bike.

I will be laying a one piece 12mm ply directly over the rubber floor once i get the pop top roof fitted. Others have done this successfully and with the weight of the board and gravity it stays in place. This will add to insulation / sound deadening and save you some work in the process but you may need to source a Caravelle step?. This additional cost may offset the batton / glue and work. Just a thought.

I am going to remove the soft foam underneath where the rear tyre sits when it's strapped down and replace it with either a firmer foam (closed cell) or a block of rubber, maybe even just a hockey puck right at the contact point, so from above the floor looks the same but its not as compressable where you need it.
Looking to do something similar when I fit the kitchen unit, cut and replace the foam with a strip of hardwood beneath where the cabinet meets the floor so I don't squash it and create a well for water to collect

Did you manage to do this after and if so, were you able to find a taller replacement side step to give the neat finish?

If you have a photo, that would be great. Thank you

I have only fitted the one piece ply floor ( not applied the Altro yet )as i am waiting for the Skylo roof announcement. The California side step fits perfectly over the rubber floor and the 12mm ply.
