Removing T6.1 gear knob (manual)

For those of you with a T61 manual 6 speed gearbox with the tacky black rubber/plastic gear knob. I tooknthe bull by the horns and removed mine. First the cap showing the gear layout - that is moulded as part of the gear knob. I sliced the cap off with a stanley blade, then split the gear knob down each side with the stanley blade and peeled the rubber gear knob off like peeling and orange. Photos show the rubber gear knob and what was left under it which is bonded to the shaft. So for future ref - this is what you are getting into if you want to remove only the gear knob and not want to fit the whole new surround, gaitor, shaft and knob.

Looking forward to seeing the new knob on!?

Ss a fallback position can anyone point me to where you get the illuminated 6 speed manual gear knob, gaitor and surround please.
Big thank you's
Creamytash.

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to send me this. If my existing plans don't work out I may have to fall back on these.
Thanks

Did you ever manage to get a replacement for the original knob? My experience of aftermarket gaiters isn’t great, so hoped to keep the original gaiter, and just change the know.

Hi, on attempting to change the original gear knob I ended up destroying the gear knob it's self as it was rubber moulded onto a metal sleve. I ended up buying a complete knew gear change set up including the gator from a supplier jn Germany - but it wasn't cheap. The gear knob had a couple of wires that you hook up to your lights switch and the top of the gear knob illuminates showing the shift pattern.

I don’t suppose you still have the old gear knob knocking around? It would be interesting to see if it could be modified.

No mate, it was soft rubber and molded to the shaft. Taking it off caused the rubber to split and break up into bits. I did post photos on here at the time so as to warn others off trying it.

I saw the pics. Brave of you to try.
Was the formed part inside, metal or plastic? I wondered if it could have been turned down and then threaded to take an aftermarket knob. If you still had the inside bit, I was going to ask for measurements.

The shaft inside was a metal tube. That is what the collar slides up on to select reverse. I chucked the lot when I received the new gear lever and knob complete.
