So, currently waiting to fit the van furniture into the van, and the storage cubby hole on the side of the work top doesn’t seem a very practical space to put things , so I want to build this elevating storage unit that comes out on a slider (locking in place) to hold all kitchen bits like food, condiments etc etc… im going to approach van furniture to see if theyll CNC me the bits if I give them precise measurements… the current hinges oak work top will then be screwed down to the top of the storage cupboard and lined up to be flush and hidden… i personally think they can add this as an option when building your kitchen with them.

shout if anyone has any ideas to put forward or if they know a CNC machine man who deals with this birch ply …

it’s not going to be red either, only thing that stands out on the background

Ingenious idea.

You thinking manual or assisted lift?

On our van, I built a 1/2 height box with handles that can be lifted out. It sits on a couple of brackets screwed to the inside of the unit.
We can lift the box out, and then access the other stuff in the lower portion of the unit space. This can all be done whilst sat on the bed/seat.
Your approach is far more elegant, but you might lose storage space with the lift mechanism.

Can you send some pics Pete ?

im currently looking at a 400mm storage unit, so it’ll drop down as far as it reaches wheel arch, then 280mm deep and then potentially 300mm wide

Will do - could be a few days as van is down at the caravan yard, but we will be using it this coming weekend.

some things to consider:
What weight do you think the unit will be when it's loaded? 10-15kg? It might be a workout to lift it up and to lower it in a controlled way.
What type of handle will you have on it to raise/lower it?
How do you plan on locking it in raised position? Unless it's automatic it will probably mean you have to hold the unit up with one hand while enabling/disabling the lock.
Might be worth doing a few weight tests before starting building the unit.
Will anyone else need to open it?
