Hi ..I need a fold down bed because my child is disabled and has brittle bones and cant sit in wheelchair too long. She needs to rest on longer journeys.

What rock n roll bed or set up would be good and easy to convert bed in day quickly so we can stop and rest. ?

I need a full width bed. How are they fitted ? You can buy off eBay but not sure about Tie downs or fittings?

Any good advice be much appreciated. Thanks

Julie

Hi Julie,

If your van is already modified for wheelchair access you may have issues fitting a rock n roll bed as they are generally fixed to the floor via bolts and mounting plates beneath the van. This blocks access for a wheelchair from the rear of the van.

I've seen a few that come on rails and could possibly be removed when required, but I imagine the bed itself would be very heavy and it wouldn't be a quick or easy job.

Those with more knowledge on these beds who actually have them fitted will possibly have other opinions.

Good luck finding something suitable.

I would recommend a RIB Altair Campervan Bed Seat as they are very easy to convert to a bed quickly, see video below

We have a Fabworx rock and roll bed and whilst it is very sturdy and well made, we have to wrestle with it to make it into a bed.

Also I would recommend getting any bed profesionally fitted as they need to stay put in a crash.

Most vans I have seen had access through the rear for wheelchairs, so as long as there's enough room behind the wheelchair for a bed to open out then you'll be fine.

There seem to be a wealth of beds available, some available on sliding rails that allow you to move it forwards and backwards for more space when in 'seat mode', although I think the ones on sliders are more expensive.

Smart Beds - Rock and Roll beds for you Campervan have one such bed on rails (first search result on Google for me), but I'm sure there will be many others.

As mentioned previously, make sure it's crash tested and professionally fitted for your peace of mind.

Hope you find something suitable soon.
