Rodent Damage Soya Electrical Wiring : Rip Off Britain

I realise that damaged wiring due to Rodent or even Fox chewing has been reported before but it has gained a wider recognition. On Tuesday 14 January 2025 AM, Rip Off Britain program reported on damage to electrical wiring on cars by Rodents. I do not normally watch this program but it was on in the background while I was reading the real news on the T6 Forum. What actually caught my attention was a Lady reporting about damage to her T6 Camper. It had been damaged on numerous occasions. She had sort solus with VW. I have not yet scrutinised the program but did hurriedly record it and will look at it sometime later. Essentially VW appeared to deny overall responsibility but researchers on the program had evidence that VW uses wiring and such that incorporates Soya to improve its green profile. This seems to attract Rodents. After all the usual entertainment that this sort of program displays, a tame lawyer suggested that the Lady had a very good case in Law and should pursue the matter legally.

Perhaps for those interested, the program could be found and viewed for more direct and uninterpreted opinion so that they may form their own views on the matter. It might be interesting to keep an eye out for any relevant litigation or any future comments from the program regarding this issue. The program also showed methods of preventing Rodent Damage with sprays and tape.

A very common problem
Yes indeed it is now and increasing evidentially. Soya use has increased across manufacturers, VW are not the only ones. they may claim it is for green reasons but more likely to reduce reliance on an expensive commodity and a commodity that is going to come even more pressurised due political ineptitude in war prevention.

We have suffered only slightly. Mice seam to be able to get access into my wife’s car somehow. She has had to lay several traps unfortunately humane traps can be anything but. We would like to use them but some smaller creatures need to eat incredibly frequently and will die in a short while if denied also there is little room in them so we resorted t more common methods. I will resist the use of poison. The T6 has only so far had interest in the battery cover. Mice seem to like getting into it climbing on top and gnawing away making a small mess. VW does seem to like leaving small wiring unprotected or the sleeving far too short. I could only imagine what is unseen.

Are some of the Anti Rodent products like sprays and so on easily available, at Halford’s for instance I wonder, does any one know?

I’ve had to resort to a bait trap under the van when it’s parked up & a block of bait on top of the battery. Some little blighter insists on nesting in the nice cosy battery jacket. I’m considering binning it to discourage the little feckers.

I was wondering about replacing the battery box it with something less flimsy. It would be pointless for me to put a trap on the floor underneath, living here their are millions of mice living in the field walls and wooded areas. It is remote, wild life proliferates, well it did. Yesterday the red coat brigade were out and about terrorising the neighbourhood. I have already lost all of my badgers. A few years ago an eagle was shot not many miles from here and I have come across a shot buzzard in the past also.

The soya stuff is used for the high temp applications...

Ie exhaust sensors....

That is good to know.

Wow just had a fighter fly over the house. They do buzz around here not as often as the past when all sorts of things dog fights, choppers of all sorts, transporters and so on but I was not expecting that one. I digress:)

I've just had to have my oil level sensor, ad blue injector replaced. They did the exhaust sensor on my old van.
Bloody nuisance, there are far more urban foxes than I ever remember seeing before......It's a massive problem (Do a search on here as there are other threads) No wonder VW are denying all knowledge.
I think another diesel gate claim would finish them off.

OK, I have just watched the TV program through with my wife, regarding the parts concerning rodent attack of wires coated with soya, VW helped the Lady with the Camper-van by paying part of her bill as a good will procedure. The tame Legal man was commenting on potholes and not culpability of VW or VW responsibility. Previously i was watching while preoccupied, but the general thrust about a problem still stands and appears to affect other manufacturers also. I may have erroneously thought that an Lawyer had suggested the Lady had a good case when in fact he was talking about the next issue on the agenda.

If the moderator considers this inadequate then strike off the thread. I am sorry will take more care in future.

One of the remedies showed what appeared to be a rubber large mat, The Rat Mat that had a small electric current passed through it. I think this was to be driven on and was enough to dissuade the beasts,

Maybe VW should include the electric rat mat in the options list, they could charge £750+
I had an idea it would cost ££ but not that many. Could one reproduce the mat? I guess so long as we did no actually electrocute our selfes it would be a useful bit of kit especially as it would prevent invasion from below which is where it usually comes from.

Surely something like this, applied every few months in winter, would be cheaper and easier?

I had a look at the video and it did seem quite effective. I am quite intrigued by the Rat Mat. Certainly if someone had a home parking space or driveway it would be just a case of drive on switch on switch off drive off one for every car. I have no lack of space, acres but believe it or not nothing completely smooth or level little hard surface. I would need to prepare a few parking spaces. Its on the grass or in the mud as it is. Thank you for the posting.:)
