Running Rich, smells like a boat engine

Hi,

My Transporter 2.0 TDI 2012 smokes and smells like unburnt diesel.

I've done alot to try to mitigate the problem.
I've changed to new injectors, turbo, egr, intercooler but problem still percist.
New dieselfilter. No water in diesel.

The van doesn't use oil or water.

I filled the tank with 50/50 diesel and kerosene and the smoke and smell went away !
So clearly it is a diesel problem.

Can it be the high pressure pump?
Or a sensor like the fuel temperature sensor or maybe the fuel rail pressure sensor?

The engine is running fine despite this problem.

I have VCDS

Any thoughts?

Any progress?
Is this a new episode or continuation of the issues in thread below?

Hi,

It has been a problem all along.
I changed both thermostats along with the motor sensor because the engine wouldn't go over 70 degrees celsius.
That cured the smoking but the exhaust still smells.

Hmmm.... but the DPF and EGR were deleted? Catalytic converter still in place? I guess the smell is only engine idling (would be difficult to sniff otherwise?)

DPF & EGR deleted and catalytic converter is removed. Smell is when idling and when I back up.
I have a china fuel pressure sensor but it seems to work ok based on the previous post with all the technical data from vcds.
