Sargent + Leisure Battery Charging Help

Is your battery AGM?. I believe like the EC155, the EC176 has a 'dumb' 13.8V constant charger.
Talking about ‘dumb’, I have no idea. Haven’t had to think about it yet. It’s a Camper King Santorini conversion I have.

The theory says it will reduce the life of the battery....cant say whether this is a reality as i swapped out the LB when i got mine and then shortly thereafter ripped out the Sargent charger. Thinking more about taking the EC155 out over winter.

The Sargent "charger" in these units is just a 13.8v regulated linear power supply, it has no knowledge or adaption to the battery it's just set at the nominal classic charging voltage for a regular flooded lead acid battery. By a quirk of chemistry these battery types will sort of self regulate so long as the "charger" doesn't supply too much current (1/10th of the capacity is the usual figure). And yes being a linear power supply it will get hot under load. The word you are looking for here is "cheap and basic"...

Using it with an AGM isn't ideal as AGM's usually needs a higher charging voltage, but it's unlikely to do any harm they just won't fully charge and there is an argument that if you are split charging from the vehicle it's better to match the battery types starter<>leisure though using a proper DC-DC charger is miles better.

Update for mine, charged it for around 6 hours from the 3 pin adapter and battery seems to be ok. I think I’ve left the interior lights on before disappearing to sunny Spain at the weekend and drained it.

Keep an eye on it, if you've drained it very low the plates are likely damaged and it will likely have lost some capacity, lead acid don't like being below 50% for very long.
