Shopping: 'Go Outdoors' For A Newbie Owner?

Having met Mr Ashley in the course of work, his senior manager warned me to be careful around him as he sheds his skin up to 12 times a year. As he now owns Go Outdoors he isn’t fit to get any of my cash. This is my personal experience and you should really make your own choices.
Unfortunately if you applied that logic to the rest of your spending, you wouldn't :-
Have a bank account
Buy diesel
Drive a VW
Fly
Use water/gas/electricity
Have a pension
Gamble
Drink
Smoke
etc etc......

We’re doomed!!!

Plus another one for Decathlon. Their own brand stuff is usually very good indeed and it's probably a good thing that I live in a Decathlon free zone with the two nearest stores to me both more than 50 miles away. A bit like @Sackmycook, I find it difficult to drive past one in Europe without dropping in and picking something up.

Going off onto a slight tangent, I recently discovered a Swedish outdoor gear company called RevolutionRace. I've only bought a couple of pairs of walking strides from them so far but I have to say that the quality is very high indeed - a bit pricey but quality gear almost always is:

I was unaware that Go Outdoors was now controlled by Ashley. That's another retailer added to my "never getting a penny from me" list then.

Decathlon definitely a good - better - alternative.

And depending where you are located OP, I'm on a similar newbie camper journey as you and recently discovered that the UK's biggest independent camping store - Attwools - is a mere 30 minutes away from us just off the M5 in Gloucestershire. We went recently to pick up a few items including a driveway awning - it's an excellent store, has everything you could possibly need and good advice too.

He nearly destroyed my club over 15 years......no exaggeration. No regard for history or tradition.

He is a ruthless businessman after buying Go Outdoors he bled it dry forcing it into administration then bought it back at a knockdown price, not having to pay many of the outstanding debts. This is his business model and it works but not if you are one of the debtors.

Collected my T6 Camper today and its my first camper I've owned so I literally have nothing to furnish it.

Would Go Outdoors be a good option to take a visit to and pick up a few bits? Im talking things like plates, cups, kettle, folding chairs etc etc. I honestly do need everything!!

Any other options for physical shops I could visit?

Chris
@T6ChrisO and welcome to the forum you will soon love your van as much as we all love ours ...

See what you started Chris ... lol with a simple question ... it Kinda goes off topic fast lol

Just plan how you will use your van and what you will need for your 1st few trips what ever you buy you will end up up dating it once you read through here and Carnac cookers and comfy folding chairs, Ridge Monkey saucepans, pizza stones it grows and grows and include storage of it all ......... then bits for your van lol but that's another story .......

Amazon is always a good place to start then fleabay you can compare all the prices before you buy what ever you buy its Half the price in here as the wives might be watching... lol good luck and happy adventures

main thing is Enjoy it.........

Nearly renamed it to the Mike Ashley Discussion thread ha ha

I've been to Go Outdoors today and picked up a few bits (boo's from the crowd), some of which was cheaper than Amazon (I checked whilst I was there lol, technology is great for that ha ha). Always worth price checking! I'll learn what I need the more I use it, just a shame the weather is so awful this weekend with the storms. I hike every weekend so this purchase was based on making my hiking trips easier and I now can stay overnight and go furtherafield :)

Thanks for the reply mate

+1 for Decathlon

All being well we shall be holidaying in Brittany this summer. It's a site we last visited 3 years ago and there is a Decathlon nearby. I've looked at UK and French websites side by side, and it seems a lot of the items are 1/2 to 2/3 price in France. I'm thinking of doing a click and collect in advance and collecting en route.

Camping du Letty via Decathlon in Quimper?!!

OMG, that's exactly the campsite @JOG - Brittany's not small, how could you hazardous a guess at that!?
Are you looking over your shoulder now?!!

Simple - it is the best campsite in Brittany! We love it!

SWMBO and I visited it (pre-sprogs) in 2005 before the outside pool and bar was developed….we have been back four times with the kids since to be amazed by the development.

You have to go much further south to beat it!

JD sports, Millets and Blacks are all part of the group.
