After having the spare nicked and then suffering a blown tyre I set to with beefing up spare wheel security, You can never make it perfectly secure to stop the determine toerag but you might as well make it as old as possible.
Thanks to @Chris Sherwood for donating me a replacement
1st stage is get an anti theft locking bolt, they cost £15-20.
Then find some scrap steel tube, I used 25mm diameter, 1.5mm thick but anything will do as long as it can slide over the thread stud.
Cut your pipe with a slight angle to suit the carrier alignment
Then try it for size, Clean it up and spray it red
Stuff the tube with dynema or Kevlar thread string or the filling from chainsaw trousers. If desperate use a bit of insulation. Use a bit of wire to pack it down because you don’t want it drawn into the thread.
Now tighten it up - job done.
The security bolt deters the casual scroat from unbolting, the shroud protects the exposed thread. The insulation material will hopefully jam up an angle grinder blade or at least put the buggers off!
