Original B14s

15mm spacers on the rear

Ride height last time I measured it was down around 80mm mark from memory.

Tyres are 225/60

Swamper 17" Fuel Zephyr alloys running non-swamper Goodyear 225/55/17s tyres

This look is like marmite, you either like it or hate it!....personally I'm liking it and comfort wise, it's so good!

I love this look. I’m considering a change to 18” Fuel coverts and considering the slightly odd size 225 55 18 tyres over the 235 55 18.
I’m currently 60mm down and running 225 60 17; I would like to ask how you find the ride and comfort from the 225 55 profile tyre? Thanks.

I need to gain ground clearance ... any advice of what size wheels and tyres would give me this without replacing shocks and not rubbing my arches .. ?
Not quite sure on your exact specification of Transporter, the variants across VW sales area must be large. Some T6 came with 16" wheels and small brakes and so on. Mine a 2019 Caravelle that come with slightly lower suspension than a van could have 17" but I choose 18" because I prefer little more space between disc and wheel rim.

I use my T6 off road it is 4Motion with rear Differential Lock. Although I have aluminium wheels that came withe the vehicle I chose 18" steel wheels. They are normally far cheaper, than alloy. For some one driving many miles off road many many miles from normal facilities, steel wheels could also have an advantage in allowing easier repair in simple work shops workshops. Perhaps with a hammer and shaping dolly. In an emergency in the bush or desert that could be vital.

Many of the wheels one sees with the swamper look are just far too fussy a design. They appear to me to be mimicking Split Rims. Which are specialist wheels designed as the word suggests. Sometimes the rims allow unbolting to facilitate replacement of tyres and sometime they allow a tyre clamp ring to squees the tyre bead to the wheel rim. These are particularly useful when tyres are deliberately deflated to very small psi, perhaps 2psi or less for driving in Swamps which is popular in some parts of the USA. I personally would not buy swamper fashion wheels. Why pay ££££££/$$$$$$ for something that appears to me just a fashion and have little attraction for me. I prefer practical solutions that lead to form. I am not someone who really cares about fashion, in pleasing popular culture or satisfying vanity for its own sake. Some swamper like products may offer some paint or body ware protection and help avoid scratches and so on.

By the way on my 18" Steels Wheels fitted BFG AT 255/55R18XL KO2 which are very good tough off road All Terain tyres with 3 Peaks Mud and Snow rating so are also All Season. While we speaking BF Goodridge are changing over slowly to KO3 which have a slightly different tread design and are promised to be even more affective in the snow. It will take a few years for every size in BFG catalogue to change from KO2 to KO3. The BFG website has published availability and promised production dates for each size. Only limited tests have crossed my eyes, so we will have to wait to see. There are of course many other off road type of tyres All Terrains are a popular option and Wild Peake have a growing popularity and are usually a little cheaper and have a few tread designs and sizes. Not sure exactly what type of terrain you may be hoping to travel on??

Larger wheels might be possible with fitting suspension lifts.

In order to have a better insight into off road World. May I suggest. That it may be a good idea to join or follow some off road platforms or buy some off road magazines on online or print. Unfortunately, although there are some safari and off road adherents in the T5, T6 world much is just for appearance. It is exactly the same for Landrover, Landcruiser and Jeep followers, many if not most never venture anywhere other than the local shopping mal or suke.

Not by enough, unfortunately.

This is my 85kg or so literally jumping up and down on the driver's door step...

If you check out on a tyre comparison site. Compare all the details and specifics, size rim diam, XL, or not VW intended pressure for original OEM tyre and so on. It just might be if you have not, then, the new wild peak tyres just might be overinflated. An example, my OEM 255/45R18 I think 102, Front 44psi to Rear 41psw changed to with BFG AT KO2 255/55R18XL I think without looking 109?, Front 35psi , Rear, 34psi.

However although less psi and somewhat softer because the tyre carcass XL and extremely tough rating they are still harsh at times. It is just a thought.

Sorry for the bold print can't reduce it!

This may be a bit late. But I cannot seem to find anything on the matter! I’m currently running solow’s on 20in 255/35/20 tires. I’m looking to go down the swamper low route, because I find the ride a little harsh over some of the country roads.

My question is, is there anyone running perhaps 17/18s on falken widepeaks with the solow’s? If so how are people finding it? Is it rubbing? What offsets have you got?

Any help will be much appreciated!

I’d like to know this too. Same situation.

Could you confirm what So Low variant you have and the range of adjustment?

This is going lower next week and rear wheel spacers. It’s a great look and one we are doing more and more. We have a set of these wheels in stock if anyone is after them.
Oli, apologies for resurrecting an old thread but can I please get the details of this van? Tyre sizes and drop?

I’m going to assume Solow LOW (the original). That’s where I’m coming from. I think realistically, as THQ advise 225/55 Cooper AT tyres are the best bet at this height, I think at the top of adjustment 60 profile is possible. I don’t think Wildpeaks can be used in 235/65 though without swapping out for other coilovers. Since I asked the above question I’ve been exploring options and for this reason I’m swapping out for STX (CRS version).

@The Bear78 is the best example in this thread of the thinking for me.

I actually have the CRS STX coilovers and am really impressed by them - the ride is just sublime on my 60 profile Cooper ATTs and money well spent; you'll love them.

Thanks for this, this does appear to be the consensus. I have STX on my Mini Cooper SE so know what they’re capable of in that application at least. Quality kit.

From memory, this is on KW STX coilers with a rear adjuster delete and on a 225/65/17 tyre. We would have added a 15mm rear wheel spacer, so the rear wheel fills the arch better.

If you are looking to go down this route there are other suspension options available on the market now that will give a better ride than the STX and suits your needs better - Technology has moved on a lot in 4 years in coilers . Bilstein, Solow and we have our own range of BMVS Edition Bilstein coilovers to offer, the feedback on our suspension has been excellent.

Thanks Oli. I had STX fitted last year and love them. I would like to fit a 225 65 17 tyre on my Coverts hence my asking about that particular van - I'm currently at 390mm centre to wheel arch and 15mm rear spacers.

Interesting comment Oli. What are the improvements in the technology in the last 4 years?. I’m a nerd for detail :)

Or is it just new products?

As with anything. Technology changes and moves along and products become better. There are many new Coilovers kits to market since the brilliant STX and the ride and comfort has improved.
