T5 To A 6 But Torn Between T30 And 32

Hello all.

About to confirm my (factory) order for a T6. I'm currently in a T5 Highline 140PS.

A new van decision was somewhat influenced by the ULEZ but also because I think it is time to trade up.

The spec I've gone for is a 204PS 7-speed DSG (Highline) with a few toys. It will have to be a factory order on the basis that I prefer the O/S SLD (panel van, not Kombi). What I can't decide on is whether to go for a T30 or a 32; I was nearly sold on the 32 but I see that rims/tyres are a bit limited in choice? I won't be carrying heavy loads but the van will be used for work. My T5 is a T28 and for what I do it's adequate. A T30 will be OK, but is there any real advantage to go for the heavier payload?

Exactly the same van with beefier suspension, if you don’t need the extra 200kg (approx 1 tonne payload) then stick with a T30
Easy wheel and tyre choice and keeps you away from class 7 MOT

Thats a good point about the MOT:

Please see below a breakdown of class 4, 5 and 7
Class 4 Mot

  • Cars (up to 8 passengers Seats) and Motor Caravans
  • 3 Wheeled Vehicles (over 450kg unladen weight)
  • Quads (max unladen weight 400kg- for goods vehicle 550kg and max. net power of 15kw)
  • Dual purpose Vehicles
  • Private Hire vehicles and PSVs ( up to 8 Seats)
  • Good Vehicles (up to 3.000kg DGW)
  • Ambulances & Taxis
  • ( Taxis and Private Hire Vehicles may be subject to additional Local requirements)
  • Private Passengers Vehicles and Ambulance
  • ( 9-12 Passengers Seats)
Class 5 Mot

  • Private Passengers
  • 13 – 16 Passenger Seats
  • Vehicle And Ambulances
  • More than 16 Passengers Seats
  • (with 13 or more Passenger seats)
  • Play buses
Class 7 Mot

  • Good Vehicles (over 3000kg up to 3500kg DGW)

Go for a T30. If you are not loading the van to the max it is highly unlikely you will ever notice the loss of 200kg.
And as said above, tyres and wheel upgrades are a whole lot simpler.
My van never carries anything like it’s maximum payload (T32), so looking to get SVTech to downplate the axles to make wheel and tyre choices better.

Would a Kombi T32 be 'dual purpose' in Class 4 for the MoT..? Would a 4Motion make it so if not..?

Yes kombis come under dual purpose (rear seats and windows) so can get a class 4 MOT, dont think the 4 motion aspect would affect anything MOT related

Afaik, conversions also come under the class 4 category if they’ve been reclassified as a motor caravan. I.e my T32 4mot LWB “motor caravan” is class 4. As usual, I could be wrong though:whistle:

Is the 204PS DSG 4 motion kombi not too heavy to be a class 4? Published unladen weights are 2234kg (SWB) and 2297kg (LWB) in highline spec. Taking 75kg off for the driver and the weight of 90% of 70 litres of fuel, would it still be in excess of the magic 2040kg to be classed as a dual purpose vehicle?

Another example of daft legislation. Before it was converted to a camper, I could carry 8 fellow humans in my T32 Shuttle. Yet its only subject to class 4. Yet a T32 panel van used to carry builders tools and some bags of cement needs a class 7. Not that I'm saying tools and cement aren't of value, you understand. But relatively speaking.

Annoyingly the one thing it does effect is the speed limits. The weight of the 4motion system takes my 150ps manual Highline over the weight limit to benefit from the dual purpose vehicle higher limits. It also had to be a T32 - no option

Is is a panel ;-) clue was in my description. Let me know if you want a price on a new one?

Apologies; missed that. I'm some way down the road with a VW van centre and I'm getting a very good deal on the price. In fact, I'm about to confirm the order in the next 24 hours.

Thanks again.
