T6.1 BiTurbo dead at 143K :(

I purchased a T6.1 T32 199PS just last week, 20 plate, with 142k miles on the clock, I knew it was high risk with the mileage but there was a full service history for oil change every 10k on the dot, new belt and pump, all the stuff I thought I had to look out for. It was just about in budget and I needed something Euro6.

The first 5 miles were lovely, then it went into a limp mode just as I was heading to Scotland for a job, no real opportunity to turn back. I did another 250 miles, then got engine warning light, DPF blocked, figured this was because it wasn't regenerating, got the DPF flushed out in Glasgow before attempting the return leg to Yorkshire. It had no power, but there was no smoke, no drama or weird sounds from the engine, it was that or a ridiculously expensive trailer ride home.

Got it to a VW specialist in Leeds the next morning, and there's filings and oil in one of the turbos, Garage have quoted 5K to supply and fit a new Bi-Turbo, part 03N145704L, said they won't know if anything else is damaged until they get it apart.

Long time lurker on this forum, read lots of horror stories about this engine, my old transporter was a 102 Bluemotion and was largely okay, this is the 199PS engine, I don't know the code as the van is now stuck in the garage until they can sort it.

I think I've read just about every thread about this bi-turbos going wonky. Does anyone have any success stories of everything being well after a turbo replacement, or is it possible the turbo failure was caused by something else I should be investigating?

Really sorry to hear this. Can I ask who the Leeds specialist is? I am in Leeds too.

That number brings up this at 2K - Darkside Developments

edit - its not in stock

The part number should be for an original vw unit which they are supplying new. They advised against a refurbed unit from midlands turbos / dark side.

The shop is IVC in Hunslet. Really nice guys and I’ve used them for years for DSG services. Came recommended by an auto electrician I’ve also been using for years. They run a very slick garage and the yard has always got at least a few transporters in it. Which could be considered a good or a bad thing I suppose!

Thank you. Alway on the lookout for a recommended VW place in and around Leeds.
