T6.1 - DPF Failure at 30,000 miles?

It's a fair point, right tool for the job and all that. Was never expecting it to be a rocket ship, just a bit more oomph to help with safely passing the 40mph in a 60mph types who seem to have their HQ down here.

3 hours since the last regen' sounds a long time to me? Especially given the alleged condition of the DPF.
Do you take a lot of short journeys or regularly run with the fuel at 1/4 of a tank or less? (which disables regens).

Certainly the first one, the van is used for the school run more than we'd like (15 mins there/15 mins back). It gets the occasional longer trip every 2-3 weeks of 1-2 hours. Fully aware that's less than ideal for a DPF equipped vehicle, hence looking for a run around to spare the van from those trips.

With 27/28mpg, it quite often finds itself with less than 1/4 a tank...

I need to get that app :) I’m interested in unravelling the mysteries of the DPF :)

Oil ash is low, it’s limit is set in the ECU somewhere, I think around 100g ash.

I can’t comment on the other numbers as I haven’t studied DPF enough yet sorry. But some others will be along to help soon I am sure :)

I agree, it’s about overtaking safely when needed and not having to downshift three times to get up a moderate hill for me. Although overtaking still needs a bit of a run-up!

Don't get me wrong, it moves around just fine, but it's my first van so I'm (wrongly) comparing to the sportier VAGs from a former life :)
You need to reset your expectations by driving around in shit cars for a while.

It worked for me - I found the van had adequate power, if a little ponderous on throttle response.

So the school run and local driving is the worst situation for any modern diesel. They need a good blast and clean out every week. Running under quarter of a tank won’t allow the regen to work, so try to always run with more than 1/4.
As mentioned via DM we’d need to take a good look at it to work out the issue. It’s very hard to help diagnose without the physical vehicle. Some datalogging and live readings would really help see what’s happening.

Thanks, understood.

There's no time in the near future I can visit in person unfortunately, but if you can recommend what to log/monitor and how to drive while logging, I can try and do that and post the results.

Any decent independent will know what to look at and test. Do you have a Transporter specialist near you?

a sensor in the DPF
Which of the sensors?

>>>> P226D (Confirmed) - Manufacturer-specific code
>>>> Engine:
>>>>
>>>> 32110 - Particulate Filter Deteriorated/Missing Substrate Bank 1
P226D = 32110 - Particulate Filter Deteriorated/Missing Substrate Bank 1

Is the exhaust tailpipe sooty?

Data logging and verification of the fault P226D was done here (post #66)

DPF Pressure Sensor - 04L906051AB

I would say it's sooty, pictures attached.

Thanks, it's not related to the issue.

Definitely not a good sign!
Below mine after 6 years. Only faint stains can be seen on bright white towel.

Oh wow...

I was just reading elsewhere I should be able to run my finger on the inside and it should be clean.

Do you think this is pointing to a breakdown/failure of the DPF itself and the EML fault is telling me too much soot is getting through? Would this also explain the poor fuel economy if the DPF is failing?

I would say that the DPF matrix is damaged and the van is running fuel rich, that exhaust IMO is very sooty even by Euro 4 standards. This would explain the poor MPG.
If you have Carista Beta you can monitor the injectors in Live Data.
Safe to say that the DPF is knackered and if I were you I’d be removing the map and getting the injectors checked.
I’d also be doing an oil / filter change, if there’s this much carbon going through the exhaust I doubt the engine oil is very clean.
I assume you’ve eliminated the possibility of a boost pressure leak?

It hasn't been checked for boost leaks but I'll put that on the list.

I downloaded the Beta version of Carista but couldn't see the injector data anywhere in Live Data?

It’s there, have a fish about, I was looking at mine just 2 days ago.
