T6.1 REAR LIGHT UPGRADE GENUINE VW 03-19 (TWIN REAR DOOR)


This popped up on the Travelin-lite FB feed, the price looked good as did the lights, so i though i would give it a go =]

The kit was oerdered and promptly delivered a day or so later.

The box contained both new rear light clusers, a set of LED reverse bulbs, a couple of de-Pin tools . . . and a wire sheet.

and the wire chart . . . .

Out the box the clusters look like this . . .

Next it was out to the van . . . . this is the Factory clusters that come from new . .

with the rear doors open i removed the 2x retaining screws . .



then slid the clusters to the outside of the van off there locating pegs . . .



these clips can be a bit tricky at first . . you need to push the outside edge of the tab downwards.

i find it easier to push the whole connector firmly inwards before pressing the tab, that way you are releasing the tension off the tab clip.



this shows the standard pin layout for the T6 (my18) drivers side, which has ALL 6 pins . . . (because drivers side has FOG light, passenger side has NO FOG light)

Drivers side:
1 - grey/white (fog light)
2 - green/black (reverse)
3 - grey/red (tail light)
4 - brown (earth)
5 - black/green (indicator)
6 - black/red (brake)

Passenger side:
1 - nc (green bung)
2 - green/black (reverse)
3 - grey/red (tail light)
4 - brown (earth)
5 - black/green (indicator)
6 - black/red (brake)

Next was to de-pin the plug.

First you need to remove the purple locking tab, i used a small flat head screwdriver to lever the tab up,then out.

next you need to insert the de-pin tool into the front end of the plug to depress the locking tabs inside the connector.

press in the tool, the ease out the wire and connector from the back . . . you can see the crimped on pin and the weather seal.

next it was just a case of re-fitting the pins in the correct order as per the supplied sheet.

here you can see the drivers side now re-pinned in the correct order . . .

next up was the LED reversing light bulb., the 4x screws needed removing . . .

next up was the LED reversing light bulb., the 4x screws needed removing . . .



and then swapping out the bulb, now LED bulbs normally only work one way . . . .

so before screwing everything back together i asked a college to help test the lights . . . if the revers LED didn't work, just rotate it 180deg.

Revers is the bottom left in this shot.



once tested you need to remember to re-fit the connector locking tab . . . . it just slides back in the way it come out . . .

newxt we moved over to the passenger side,

removed thepurple locking tab . . .

Then de-pinned to connector . . . . .




There is only 5 pins this side, so you need to remove the green bung and move that too.

once re-pinned the connector should look something like this . . .





a quick test with a colouge shows that all the lights were working as expected . . .




so it was time to refit them . . . . first lining up the pillars, the sideing the clusters into place from the outside of the van, pushing inwards . .


once they are lined up,you can replace the 2x screws each . .

what about the passenger Fog light?

well it seems that the T6.1 has the passenger Fog light from factory . . .


this means we need to get a new pin for the connector and weather seal, then run a wire though the body, up and over the rear over to the drives side cluster.

once there we need to tap into the fog light feed.

once i get the pins etc ill update this pt4.

ill leave part5 for swapping out all of the rear cluster bulbs for LEDs and deal with the VCDS coding to stop the Light-out warnings you get with some LED bulbs . .

Brilliant info. Just had mine delivered today, they didn't send wiring instructions in the box though. Did you get the brake error code?

No, because I used standard bulbs.

@Dellmassive what’s the connector for in the new cluster? Is there a fixed LED or bulb somewhere in the cluster that the bulb tray powers?

yes, an LED strip inside.

from memory . . . The bulb locations are in green.

and the Blue is an internal LED.

connected in parallel with the middle bulb.

Just about to fit these on the T5.1, fingers crossed the wire colours are the same. I got mine for £105 posted new and genuine removed from a new van which was hacked up to go to a coachbuilder, bargain! 5 sets sold out super quick. I will update this when i have completed mine to confirm. Excellent write up by the way

The van is at the body shop for rear end repair. I have decided to upgrade my T6 to T6.1 rear halogen lights. Trying to confirm pin locations for old/new and colours. Is the below correct? TIA, Rik.

I'm in the process of fitting them to my T5 having the wiring instructions on this thread has helped me to understand better. The wire colours are different on the T5, so going to use a test light to find which one does what tag them then follow the diagram. Will let you know how it goes.

I "swapped" the standard reverse bulb for an LED light bulb... I gives better and brighter light.

Hi could you tell me why the top of the lights only light sometimes in the photo’s ? Is that part only for brake? I’ve seen a few t6.1 with that lit all the time.
