T6.1 USB-C ports given up

Hi all, first post and appreciate your assistance with my USB-C port issue. I've used the search feature and whilst a few others seem to have had a similar issue, I couldn't find a resolution - hence my post.

I have a 2020 T6.1 with the entry level Composition Media Colour infotainment system. I use the wired CarPlay feature exclusively. The van is out of warranty.

The USB-C ports located near the cup holder have been acting up for around 6 months. One port was intermittently connecting, then stopped completely. The other has now done the same. It was a state of gradual decline for both, but I now can't get anything from either - no power supplied to the connected device for charging, no wired connection to CarPlay.

I've tried multiple cables. Quality ones, cheap ones, cables I've used in the past, brand new cables I've never used before. I've validated all those cables work fine when plugged in to other devices.

I've tried multiple phones and verified they charge and establish a data connection with other connected devices correctly.

I've checked the 10A fuse in position 15 on Fuse Box C per this reference. All good.

I've pulled the cup holder assembly out and manually checked and re-seated both the cables to the USB-C unit part number 2G6035736.

I've air dusted the ports themselves.

Nothing made a difference. Any other things I should be looking in to here?

My local VAG parts supplier can get me a replacement 2G6035736 for £50-ish including VAT which I'm fine with. I'm planning to try that next.

Thanks,
Dan

That's a good price - used tat on everyones favourite auction site costs almost that much.

Should also add - I factory reset the Composition Media Colour infotainment unit too, just to rule out any weirdness that might introduce. Also made no difference :(

Had the same issue. Quick blast with contact cleaner and a clean with an old tooth brush and seems to be working.....for now

Following up on this in case it proves useful for anyone else.

I tried the proposal of using contact cleaner and toothbrush - no joy.

I purchased the replacement part 2G6035736 - that fixed it.

I noticed the new part has a HW version 010, SW version 0320 and a date showing 12/2022. That compared to the outgoing part which was HW version 007, SW version 0317 and dated 11/20. I assume this is a newer hardware + software revision so let's hope it lasts longer than the last!

Thanks all for your input.

Hi, just wanted to ask if you fixed this yourself ie did you remove the old part and replace with new? If so, was it difficult? What did you need to use? I have the same issue with my 2020 T6.1 that I bought 2nd hand and just trying to figure out if I could try and fix it myself (I am an absolute novice!) Thankyou.

Hey! Yes, I did it all myself. I'm an enthusiastic amateur (at best!) - and I wouldn't say it was too tough. Basic steps here with a few pics attached to help. No warranty offered or implied and any process improvements welcomed from other contributors :)

Start by turning the ignition off so the infotainment system is powered off - we don't want to upset anything.

Step 1. Remove the entire cup holder assembly. It lifts up and out, but is fixed in place with some strong clips. This is probably the 'hardest' bit in the sense that you'll need some trim removal tools, or something suitable to pry it out without damaging the plastics or breaking the clips. See attached image 1 which shows the assembly removed and the location of the clips (the yellow bits) to help you find the best place to use your trim removal tool. Take it slowly, a clip at a time.

Step 2. With the assembly removed, you need to detach the green and red connectors from the 2G6035736 part. They both have a small plastic latch on the connector body itself that you need to depress before gently sliding each out. You can see the green latch on attached image 2. The red connector latch is slightly rebated inside the unit, so you can't see it on my picture - but same principle. Be careful - don't force them. If the connectors don't move, check you've fully depressed the latches.

Step 3. You need to unclip the faulty part 2G6035736 from the overall assembly. Referring to attached image 2, it's the black plastic latches at the bottom of the image (closest to the top of the cup holder assembly). There are these latches on 3 sides of the assembly, all of which need to be depressed to release the 2G6035736 part. If the image doesn't make this bit clear, don't worry - it will be obvious when you're looking at it. With the latches depressed, It will eventually slide out. Note: I've seen some posts elsewhere suggesting these latches sometimes break in normal usage which have caused USB ports to drop inside the cup holder - so be careful with these, too!

Reinstallation is the reverse of the removal steps above.

Personally I connected everything up and tested it before clipping the cup holder assembly back into place.

Easy job really - did most of it in the car park of the parts centre before I drove home :)

Wow, thankyou, I wasn't expecting such a detailed reply! You've made it sound and look like I might actually be able to have a go at this :) What's the worst that could happen?? :D I just need to get hold of the part and some trim tools! Thanks again :)

No worries at all, happy to share the bits I've learnt - I'm sure I'll benefit from someone doing the same for me one day.

Make sure you post back when it's all done, would love to hear how it goes.

If you need any pointers on buying the part, I went with my local branch of TPS - see Home | TPS - for Volkswagen Group Genuine Parts. All they needed was the part number from above, and they had it in for me after a few days. £58.68 inc VAT as mentioned above.

So ... finally an update! I did get a part but not from TPS as they said they only sold to trade. Got one locally though for £49.90 + VAT. Didn't get round to trying to put it in until yesterday and try as I might I just could not pull the cupholder out as was getting stuck in the corner  Anyway, I drove to my mechanic and asked him very nicely and he got it out and put new part in and .... it works! Unfortunately though I can't seem to get any sound through Spotify or BBC Sounds and this seems to be a common issue. I've tried all the cache clearing and re-setting etc etc but no joy. Almost wishing I hadn't bothered changing the ports now

Oh how frustrating!

You don't mention if you're an Apple or Android user? No issues with my iPhone using Apple Music and BBC Sounds.

Do you get any audio from other apps - for example, audio alerts in the whatever navigation app you use - application for turns, speed cameras, etc?

I've gave up on android auto now. Usb ports are temperamental at best, no Spotify sound and my phone gets too hot using AA dongle while on charge. Phone mount to the right of the steering wheel

I'm using Android. I can play the radio (if radio is on before I connect the phone!) But when using Android Auto no sound from Spotify or BBC Sounds etc etc. I can hear the lady giving directions through Google Maps. It's so weird as the songs/podcasts etc show that they are playing but there is just no sound. I'm not sure what is worse ... no sound or listening to Vernon Kay   Much Google searching suggests doing resets, disconnects etc etc or could be an issue with the SOS system ... The previous owner of my van appears to have misjudged a height restriction one time and the SOS box got ripped off so it could be to do with that

Frustrating. I don't know anything about Android Auto to say with confidence, but I guess it sounds like something is up with way the head unit is mixing the audio for non-navigation output from your phone? Definitely not trying to be 'that guy', but can confirm CarPlay doesn't have that issue here.

I was seeing another famous issue where the audio over CarPlay would start to get a scratchy interference-type sound after using it for a period of time - that could only be fixed by stopping and restarting the audio source (or dropping the volume on the unit and then returning it, which does the same thing). But fingers crossed, that actually hasn't happened since I replaced the USB port module. Although that may just be a combination of a relatively small testing time + extensive wishful thinking :)
