T6.1 - What is this for on the underside please?

As per the title, WTF is this for on the underside of our T6.1 please? it is a small piece of plastic on the underside in front of both wheels that drops down slightly. it’s like a small mud flap if that makes sense.

the picture I have is poor as the supplier has hacksawed through them. i am just wondering what they are and what they are for. let’s just say I am not impressed and they are telling me that they serve no purpose. if that was the case then why would Vw spend the extra money making a more complex part.

It looks like they have removed the splash guards for the suspension bush mounts.
The only reason I can see for that would be to enable access for jacking the van up or applying axle stands for support.
It is difficult to find anywhere to put axle stands on the rear with all the covers on because the place you jack it up is where you want the stand to be, there's not many points that are suitable for axle stands on the back end.
If they have sawn them off to do that then that's just laziness, I'd be asking for replacements.
If they served no purpose then VW wouldn't have put them there. They don't spend money on parts that are not necessary.

They should look like this..

Second that, I work for toyota and they are part of the aerodynamics for emissions, if they weren't needed they wouldn't be fitted. Request they replace them

Name and shame, this Garage needs naming so others don't find themselves in the same situation. Poor, Lazy workmanship.
They have done this because they couldn't be arsed to remove all the plastics correctly.

Since it’s the same part but extended to fill between the fuel tank, is the bulk of this (With the X) also a wind deflector and is it covering anything? I noticed it in schematics for the LWB and it’s not there for the SWB as this is where the chassis extension is.

The underbody plastics are there to protect the underside of the chassis/body from road dirt/salt/water etc, they do a pretty good job of keeping the chassis clean and rust free.
Take any of them away and rust can set in quite quickly once stone chips get through the paint and the salt water follows through.
I guess on the LWB that final cover just fills in the extra 12" space that's there behind the tank, you can see the back of the tank on my picture at 3 O'Clock.

I see, thanks. I wouldn’t permanently remove it, just thinking of space for conversion bits.

this is a specialist wheelchair conversion company so most of you will never encounter them. I fully intend to ask/tell them I want them replacing. Fortunately this is a Motability lease vehicle so we will have their backing to make sure it is done right.

thank you all for your answers though as I did think they wouldn’t waste money if they weren’t needed.

does anyone have a new LWB that they could take a picture of the underside for me please so I know exactly what they should be putting back.

The photo in post #9 is a LWB

The T6 didn't have them were they wrap around the jacking point, so you could remove the under tray on a two post ramp easier.
Most likely just cut them off to make their life easier.

If they'd done a better job of cutting them, you'd probably never have noticed!
