T6.1 won’t recognise phones for carplay/android auto, but will charge phones.

Hi all I know this has been asked before a million times but I’m struggling to find any clear solutions. I have a T6.1 Highline, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto isn’t working via USB-C, even though my phones charge through the ports. When I say not working I mean it won’t even recognise the phone or other usb media. I’ve tested it with both a Google Pixel 8 and an iPhone 12 using multiple official cables, but no luck. We’ve also cleaned the ports, but that didn’t help. On the off chance that anyone knows, could this be a coding issue, or is there something else I should try? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Make sure you're using a data cable. I had the same issue and invested in a proper VW cable. Works a treat.

I have used an official apple cable, a VW branded cable and a generic USB-C no brand one. The generic one has performed (so far) better than either of the others.

Has it ever worked and is it the original or after market head unit?

It’s the original unit, and we’ve only had the van for a few days and hasn’t worked for us.

I've had a lot of trouble with Android Auto (there's a thread on my solution that's still working for that) but if it's not recognising basic items like USB media then there might be a failure.

If it's a factory fit and you've never had it work beyond power then I would suggest getting a USB-C stick from a reputable brand and putting some MP3s on it. If that doesn't get recognised and play okay than I would suggest following up with VW as a warranty issue.

This is the Hybrid Sandisk stick that sits in mine and has been reliable

As far as I know CarPlay should be enabled on all t6.1’s. If you got the van from a dealer i would go back to them.

I have the same issue in a caddy for apple car play but it works with android auto. I have used the same lead from the transporter that I know works. Will have to keep investigating. Hope you get sorted

Hi Toby12.
I had this issue when I got my T6.1. Did what you have done, different cables and tried different phones, but would not connect. In the end I sorted it my resetting the head unit and also deleting the WV app I had on my phone. Once I had done this it started to work as expected. It didn't like being logged on to an account. It's worked fine 18 months since. I have however developed a very infrequent issue where it drops out and doesn't reconnect but I think this is an issue with the USB hub itself reading the forum. I've bought a replacement but not fitted yet as currently is working as normal.
Good luck with the issue.

Thanks guys, tried all of that and no luck - also tried replacing the usb c unit, but again no luck! So it’s off to the dealer to see if they can sort it…

Have you checked if it works with something basic like a USB stick of media?

There are huge amounts of protocols and things that can go wrong with phone communication, but USB Mass Storage is super basic and should always work.

Hi @Toby12 as I mentioned above, I had this issue with my caddy. Changed out the usb reader for PN:5Q0035726E and it works fine. This has a green connection instead of black. The only issue I had was the connector on the loom was different so I had to depin it and use the connector that came with the 2nd hand reader
