T6 and iPhone X not playing nicely

I took delivery of my new Kombi yesterday fitted with the Discovery Nav and although there is no issue with them pairing up via Bluetooth they will not play nicely via wifi.

My phone has an enabled hotspot, the nav unit sees the hotspot but will not connect to it, it always says connection failed. I tried using an iPhone 7 and they paired perfectly ok, so I assume it's an issue with the X and the Nav unit.

Anybody else got an X and Discovery Nav to play together?

The in-car wifi will be a great help in keeping the kids quiet on long trips, my Touareg has this feature and it's brilliant.

I have. It will only connect when the hotspot screen is on the phone. It’s a PITA. Was the iPhone 7 connected previously and you’ve restored a backup to the x? You might have to delete the connection on the nav and start again.

I need the hotspot settings page open for the nav to connect. After it’s connected it stays connected no matter what.

Had similar issues having to manually connect wifi each time on a 6S but 5S does it automatically ?!
Have 7 & 8 now but not tried the WiFi connection yet

On mine it will not automatically re-connect. I have to turn the phone hotspot physically off then back on again every time.
I was told this was deliberate to stop connections you had previously used but no longer wanted to connect being able to (which makes sense if you think about it).

I have the same issue with my android head unit. Always have to turn the hot spot off and on again on my iPhone 6 :(

I tried to leave the hot spot settings menu open and still no dice. What software do you guys have on your headunit? I'd do the online update but I can't get online

I am fairly sure these are just map updates but I think you have to use the original VW map SD card. I don’t think it will work with any other SD card.

I saw that as well, so I was going to clone the original sd card, but there was an option to use the original sd card or to use a blank one that met the correct criteria so I used a blank spare.

If the blank doesn't work then I'll try the original card as the update utility does a backup of the original card before writing to it.

I would really use the original VW card first. The download program firstly checks which version is already on the card and then advises if you need an update.

It updates the menu system as well so there is a software update included but i think its only on the navigation side ?

Probably quicker to get your wallet out and put a new head unit in. From what iv read everywhere the software is pants. £1,500 pounds worth of rubbish, VW should do better. Rant over.

I have been really happy with my Discovery Media.
You get map updates twice a year free of charge.
You can sit at home, plan your routes, download POI’s and then send them to your vehicle using CarPlay.
The routing seems to work just as well as my old Garmin and TomTom.
It has never ‘frozen’ or locked itself.
Once connected to my phone hotspot it picks up traffic delays and offers to re-route around it.
Perhaps I am just lucky but in over a years use it has never let me down and it has taken us all around France and Spain using different parameters such as Toll on, Tolls off etc.

Think you have hit the nail on the head. Head units these days without CarPlay and android auto are becoming obsolete. Glad it’s doing the job for you. I replaced my standard unit just because I wanted those features. Phone integration is great and makes life so much easier.

Well it got as far as extracting the files to the blank sd card and then fell over with an extraction error. So I put the original card in and the system/maps are already up to date.

Looks like I'll have to try another way to get the phone and wifi to work on the van.

That’s a bit of a mystery, have you tried this.
Open your phone to hotspot page and turn the hotspot off but leave the screen open, turn on discovery and wait till it all boots up, then turn hotspot on, leave the phone screen open at the hotspot page and wait a minute.
If that fails go to settings on Discovery where you can view the available hotspots and find the phone (if it’s failed you will see it greyed out) tell it to forget it and start over again (that’s the wireless lan setting not the Bluetooth)
I am doing this at home from memory so.........
Oh, just a thought you do have the ignition turned on - it won’t connect if it’s off.

A virtual pint if this works, fingers crossed.
