Hi everyone new user

Big breath

I have ended up with “you need a new engine” I am not at all mechanical

My Kombi has done 72k I’m the second owner not on the mainland take the van to France twice a year rest of mileage is on island circa 10k a year

Have had the van serviced regularly a new EGR type D fitted two years ago after light coming on also two replacement oil pressure sensors within 13 months of each other have been told turbo needs replacing likely damage from previous EGR and the engine is breathing likely due to EGR issues have also gone through a set of tyres front every year told that normal too

The van has always drunk oil like a rugby player on a night out have been told numerous times that is normal for both the van and the rugby player !

On a trip to the alps St Malo to Bourg and back 4 litre of oil used typically. On the peage the dpf light would come on after about 200k and the go off then come on again after 100k

Not a lot of choice when it come to specialised VW here main dealer is multi franchise or independents

Friend in the trade has found that there is a crated engine available as opposed to buy parts separately (goodwill by VW) only addition according to dealer would be turbos with surcharge refunded they have also advised new exhaust and dpf all for about 15k independent circa 13k but does not include exhaust or DPF

I am minded to bite the bullet and go dealer
Am resigned to new engine as this is a forever van

I m at a loss as the best way to go
is there warranty
should VW b contribute more
Is it a lottery that in 5 years I’m likely to be facing the same s’’’ show again?

Any advice from those that have faced the same bows and arrows but have come out the other side smiling appreciated

Cheers

what engine have you got?

102ps ?
110ps ?
150ps ?
204ps bi-turbo ?

or Engine code, ie - CXEB?

CFCA then 180 Bi-Turbo ( is that the EU5 with no adblue?)

could be worth a quick look here:

Common Problems

The Transporter CFCA engine suffers with a problem with the EGR cooler (Google search CFCA EGR cooler, you'll find plenty of information!)

Before carrying out any tuning work we would recommend a compression test to ensure the engine is healthy, unless you are aware of the issue and have already taken preventative measures.

Compression Specifications:

Normal - 362 – 450 PSI
Min – 275 PSI
Maximum difference between cylinders – 75 PSI

We are now only offering tuning on the CFCA engines after a compression test has been carried out. We can offer this service from £150+ VAT on top of the tuning prices. (You would need to book in with us in advance)

Generally, our customers request us to remove the EGR cooler, blank the EGR and the remove the DPF to stop the DPF from becoming blocked. This is done to prevent irreversible damage caused by the CFCA EGR cooler failing.

Later Transporter 204bhp/199bhp and Amarok engines do not have the same EGR issues so we do not require a compression test before tuning.

yes no add blue required tks

you might have a worn engine? as in bores and pistons like the DS video?

Cheers from what “they” have said here in the island it’s a new engine and turbo or a turbo now engine later if it was a plane I would not get on it
So resigned to full new unit and ancillary’s quoted turbo EGR and exhaust and DPF for it all to happen again at a later date

I've just had the same thing. Don't mess by fitting a turbo then an engine as the oil will kill your turbo early. If the dpf if not saturated in oil get it back flushed as this is cheaper. Fit a new engine ect and be amazed at how much power you were really down. I never complained about the power as I thought it was good before, but wow the mid range is very good and it's only done 1k upto now. Price wise it sucks, but if your keeping it and everything else body wise is good who cares it's only money. btw I'm broke now

Thanks it just feels like a gun against the head I do think I’m looking at the new engine and drive away with a “new” van the quote is showing replacing CFCA with CFCA so is that not just buying the same problem?

if the original problrm was the EGR failing, before revision D.

then you could assume that a NEW engine with a REV D or later EGR cooler would NOT have the same problems down the road - as VW have seen the problem a made revisions to fix the problem.

BUT,

If you replace with USED engine with an unknown history . . . then you may have the same problems later on.

are the CFCA blocks available from VW anymore? - or are the all recons these days?

no idea, though Darskide seem to imply that they are available, but its going to cost £12k for the full new engine with labour!

Too Late?

For those not so lucky to catch it early, we now offer a full brand new genuine CFCA engine swap service. This is ideal for those happy to keep the van in its original spec. We can still offer our usual tuning and modifications but for obvious reasons this would void all warranty on the new parts.

**Please note, when swapping the engines on these vehicles, other parts are required to be removed. This may result in further parts and labour costs if these parts cannot be salvaged**

It's cheaper to buy the full engine and inlet manifold from vw. Don't bother with a recon as it works out more expensive. I'm letting it run in first then blacking off the problem egr which is the root cause of the issues.

TPS and the local dealer are quoting brand new CFCA base engine plus additional items ie turbo
for circa 6.5 K dealer quoting in addition new exhaust and dpf re warranty I think I think they have excluded new EGR as it is was changed from type c to d when it failed two years ago

If you can, go for the new engine. Do what the darkside article tells you to do plus the additional oil cooler.

Update
The van has been to the dealer ( the independent is the one who said it needed new turbos and new engine) dealer has plugged her in and run diagnostics….. they report no need for new engine. need new turbo cam belt water pump etc fix leaking crank seal etc ???
I’m confused now

Brief history of how we got here

History of the cam belt and leak
I had the cam belt water pump etc changed as routine maintenance
28 07 22 Goodwins

1st leak ? Reported 02 03 23 by as part of vehicle check before going to France and oil pressure sensor changed

Referred to
Oil leak attended to on 22 03 23 another cam belt fitted

Sept 23 Oil reported in tray service vehicle and check leak and tray no leak oil could be historically in tray 19 09 23

Upper boost hose replaced 25 09 23

Had the oil pressure sensor replaced by this May the above pictures of oil leak reported then.

I thought this might help give some background on the van

In addition I have had the EGR replaced in July 2020

And as mentioned the van poures out smoke from the exhaust when pulling away from junctions etc and reversing

Turbo played up end of June sounded like a hairdryer with peppercorns rattling around
