hi first time posting but interested to hear from anyone with a similar problem ,t6 highline delivered 20th november 2016 windscreen cracked within a week of taking delivery (definitely a stone this one !),and just cleaned it (a weekly occurrence !)
and its cracked again ! again drivers side lower near the a pillar ,but this time its actually a chip under the wiper /bonnet trim actually on the black surround so would assume a bonded section ! (how did that happen ,can barely get a finger in there ,so how the hell did it get a chip down there ? ,
wouldn't mind, but how will this pan out ,could it be a fault in the fitting ,or a problem with the screens ,or just plain unlucky? obviously the first new screen wasn't a genuine vw one ! don't do massive miles and no motorway driving ,all small A and B roads (2500 miles on clock)

Welcome @tjr Thats a bummer mate, from what you say it may have been knocked when it was being installed. Car screens are usual 4.4 laminated. So 2 pieces 0f 2mm glass laminated together. They are very weak and the a small knock can chip or start a run in one or both panes. Maybe worth asking to see if they will do you a FOC replacement as the is no sign of a impact on the screen.

Get it replaced and have a film fitted on the outside to stop it from happening again.

Film? there is a chip to start the crack ,but it seems to be very unusual for a stone to hit where it is ? i suppose they would argue the chip is sign of a stone

Yep a film it's called clear plex, I fit it to the outside to stop chips

Interesting would this be able to be done as an insurance job ? What's the cost , are there any local fitters in the Scottish Borders / north east area ? I realise I'm probably going to need a new screen , wondering about claiming on the insurance and insisting on a genuine vw item , if such a thing is possible !

As a post script , when you have a screen replaced , if you're vat registered you have to pay for fitting and glue costs + vat on top of your excess !

Probably not on insurance. Best thing would be to google fitters in your area. Cost wise you would be looking in the area of £140-£200 depending on the fitting company.

I thought all 'Highlines' had heated windscreens and that there were only genuine ones available?

Yes it does , but no vw logo on it , so would imagine it's a pattern part , not that makes it any worse ( it lasted about the same amount of time as the original, in fact a week longer I think !

Had my heated windscreen replaced a couple of weeks ago by AutoGlass, had to wait a week for them to order it. It is marked with the VW logo and Saint Gobain. It cracked right on the edge halfway up the A pillar, leaving a nice stone chip to the paint work as well. £75 excess through the insurance.

sorry autowindscreens not autoglass !FullSizeRender.jpg that's water on the plastic trim not a stress mark from an impact

when they replace it, check that there is no weld splatter, as a tiny ball of weld might do this from behind the edge of the glass.

I've had 2 replacement windscreens on my work vans and have only ever paid the excess of about £75 (I'm VAT registered).

An easy way to check for stone inpact on a cracked screen is with a ball point pen.
You will feel the impact with the pen when it rolls over it with the nib.
Quite often if the plenum chamber or other trim isn't clean when refitted i a bit of grit can crack the very edge under the trim then when you start driving and the vehicle flexes the crack appears to appear from nowhere.

There does appear to be a chip , but it's virtually below the plastic trim at the bottom of the windscreen,

Mate.....that's bad news! I'm feeling your pain....when I got my T5, I seemed to be forever hearing bangs as debris got flung off the road by oncoming and overtaking traffic! Now, I brace myself whenever a wagon comes flying past! On that subject, and not wanting to hijack the thread.....most of the roads I travel on are twisty B roads and fast A roads. My pet hate, when I'm trundling along at 50mph (when other vehicles can do 60mph) is where some tw*t overtakes and then cuts straight in, in front of me! Feel free to overtake......but don't then chop me up! One of these days, I'm convinced one of these w*nkers will take out my screen.....I've often wondered, would you be able to pursue them through your insurance company? It happened on Friday night......and childishly, I resorted to flashing my lights which then prompted an exchange of "friendly" gestures! Seriously, if he'd damaged my screen, the wires in my head would have "shorted out" and it wouldn't have been pleasant!
Any thoughts.....apart from the obvious need for me to grow up!
