Tandem pump pipe broken?

Hiya.

T5 1.9 2004; I've had some issues and was looking to replace the unit or just buying a gasket repair kit for it, however I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the rear pipe off from the back. On inspection it seems to have a lot of free play up and down and all around and if I try to pull it off, it starts to ooz a little oil. I've included a pic of it and a small vid of the movement next to pic. Does this seem normal? The end is chipped away and some of the little rubber washer seems to have come away. Also not sure if this is part of the unit or just a pipe a can replace.

Hi there,

I do not think this is normal as it should be forming a seal, the damaged area is probably from someone forcing it off with a screwdriver in the past.

The pipe should pull off if you look at the photograph below.

What are your issues? Is the van starting ok?

Hiya.

I tried pulling the pipe off again yesterday and I cannot seem to get it off. It starts to seep oil from that crack in the end of the tube. I'm looking into this as it does have hot starting issues which are intermittent and also oil looks like it's coming from below the pump and running down the engine and there seems to be wet oily misting over parts surrounding the pump/pipe. I thought maybe the loose movement and chip in the plastic was causing this.

Hi there,

Watch this video, different car but same pump and mentions how difficult the pipe is to remove. Probably worth replacing the pipe if it is loose as it will be causing a vacuum issue. Also if there is oil here then the seals are probably leaking inside.

Good luck

Did you forget to add the link to the video? :slow rofl:

You meantion the seals inside may be leaking; is this something you think can be fixed with a gasket repair kit? In all honesty I would love nothing more than to just throw a new pump on and be done with it but I cannot. Thanks for the help!

Yes sorry, personally I would replace the pump. I have not watched the full video but I think they can be rebuilt but the issue is trying to find a good rebuild kit.

Hi, how did you get on? Did you get sorted?
Hi mate. I bought one of the gasket kits from the guy in the YouTube video. Was simple enough to do, however I do think a new pump will need to be in order. Also it's hard to see at the moment if it's still leaking any oil between the block and pump (I did accidently bend the metal gasket at 90 degrees trying to get that bugger in place) It's done 312k miles so probably well past its lifespan. I appreciate your help.

Hey, thanks for the update.

Has this helped with your hot start issues?

Go to a garage and use a hot jet wash to wash the top of the gearbox and front of the head and block if it is still covered in oil.

That is good mileage to be fair.

I wanted to give a little more time before confirming, but the hot start issue is still there, however it's not as much. Maybe the gasket kit was enough to prevent it sometimes but not completely? Who knows. Maybe a new pump in due time will tell. Probably a couple of the pipes also as these were quite badly perished.
