That "Oh No What have I done" moment - completely dead after fiddling with the head unit [Resolved]

Pull these fuses and check for 12v on the terminals (also double-check the fuses for continuity whilst they are out)

If you cannot measure 12v on the terminals in the socket, remove the battery, remove the cover to the e-box and check fuse 9;

Thankyou - I've just gone through the fuse box in the cabin visually checking the fuses (none blown).
The dashcam hardwiring won't fit in the fuse box the correct way round.
I couldn't pull those 20 and 40 amp fuses out - do I just need to use more force, or is there a technique to it?

Engine bay fuse box in a few hours - got to cook dinner for the kids.

If the dashcam feed isn’t corrected, you’ve got an unfused wire there - the live is bypassing the fuse when you have it upside down.

It is fused, when it’s in upside down the piggy backed circuit is connected after the donor fuse, not before as it should be

So... I'm mobile again!

While I was adopting the T6 fusebox twisty posture again the missus was calling garages to see if anyone had someone who could look at our van AND be able to do it sooner than six weeks away. One of them, a VW specialist, recommended a chap called Craig who works under the name of Lightrofit. He came round after his other jobs - I was encouraged to see he drove up in a Transporter with an Alpine headunit in it!

The dash fuse (top left on the fuse panel, 5A) was indeed intact, but he spotted that there was no voltage across it, so accessed the fusebox under the battery and there was a 30A fuse blown there which supplies the dash etc. It's not clear what caused that, though.

He checked the ECU for any unusual fault codes and that the battery was OK.

If he's on here - thanks again - you've saved us much grief juggling work, kids, etc - the last 24hours have been enormously stressful

Thanks also to you all who helped with suggestions. I've learned an awful lot.

AND that silvery USB cable has gone. I'm so chuffed now.

Cheers!

Glad to hear you're mobile again. The smallest issues can sometimes cause the most stress.

Fantastic to hear that you got sorted - was brilliant to see all the help bailing in at you from fellow members!

Hello again!

It was as indeed me :)

I don’t advertise my work or business on here to not step on the rules and often don’t get time to visit the forum but thank you for the kind words.

You have a lovely and well specc’d van!

Also, thank you for the sandwiches, proper tasty!

Any issues, you have my number :)

Craig
