Thule Wingbar Evo

Hello all,

Please can someone advise me. We have had some Thule Evo bars fitted, I just wanted to check if the roof mountings are fully water tight or if we need to add any sealant around the mounting points at all?

Thank you very much, Martin

This is a very good and thoughtful query. If they are attached via the standard roof holes there is a risk of water ingress, as with anything bolted on there. Did you see prior to fitting if the foot sections of the roof bar kit have a rubber gasket or pad that snugly and completely covers the roof holes? I can't see any photos online for this. If not maybe undo one and have a look see.

Obviously it's not a huge job to seal them up if you have four longer bolts to screw in and then daub sealant in and around the thread of the sacrificial bolts just proud or flush with the roof - or the bolts from the thule kit that can be cleaned off after the media you apply has set/gone off.

After all that or even if you don't think any of the above its required, you could maybe grease up the threads of the footing bolts just in case there's the slight chance water can collect in the footer cavities and capillary down the thread of the bolts.

Good luck with it and send us any photos if you want further feedback

Hello thank you so much for the quick reply. I’ve just taken a pic now, I didn’t see any rubber gaskets being added the the new ones just attached with the Thule fixing bolts i think. I’ve just checked the old fixing bolts and they have a a rubber gasket on them. Would I be able to see water inside the walls around the insulation if there is a problem with ingress? Thank you for your help.

Water ingress is a difficult one to discover up high. Most people don't find it until it's got to the floor at the lowest point and then it's a guessing game as to where it's gettng in along with the contemplation that their ply floor is potentially shot. If you have a light coloured carpet lining it can be more obvious though.

You're not at that point though. Whip one of the feet off and have a look see and put your mind at ease. If it wont come off with gentle pulling and only wiggles slightly after you've removed the bolt then the installer may have sealed it - put bolt back in and step away hehe
