Timing belt change

Does anyone have anything that confirms what the interval now is?

Mine is 5yrs old in August, will be on 75k miles roughly. Does it need doing?
 
Mines 5 years old and on 83k I had my done on 81k just get it done don’t take the risk IMO.
 

There is plenty of info in the search, perhaps too much - I think you will find post #726 is still the definitive answer. Personally I am not sure I would wait 28 years (as I cover approx 5000 miles per annum) before changing the belt.
 
Yeah there is too much info, sounds like the actual answer is down to personal choice.

I've only ever had a timing belt changed on 1 car, don't usually keep them long enough.

It was a Ford, which was very clear... 10 years or 100k miles.
 
Before VW changed there mind with regards to no time the interval it was every 4 years , I'm just about to have my 2nd Cambelt , for what it costs it isn't worth the risk to me !
 
I think that a mileage interval does seam sensible because over that distance the belt would be subjected to quite a bit of stress and strain! Of course all materials might be subject to chemical erosion and degradation oil on rubber synthetic what ever but 4 years regardless is probably a sop to dealerships. Most vehicles will be gladly out of their hands by then and someone doing minimal miles for instance the time covering COVID when most people where more or less restricted to staying close to home then the 4 year time is more of a penalty rather than a precaution surely. My own vehicle 2019 199 Caravelle has not had a change. I am more concerned with a suspected repeated wheel sensor which warned along with a few other yellow lights stabilisation, ABS, tyre pressure warning, front assist. So have booked that in with my Independent VAG guy just as I was in the process of ordering work elsewhere for down hill assist. Someone, something is determined not to let me proceed with that it seems. Wheel sensor problems are a major pain in the ass for me as it will most likely be the 4th:rolleyes::)
 
It was a bit of a give away that while we were advised to change our cam belts at 4 years, those T6 owners on the continent weren't!
Amazing but does not surprise me! Is their a consensus amongst the experts on here what might be a sensible mileage to change and what would be a sensible time in years to change the belt because it seems ridiculous some one with very limited miles changing every years regardless. I do not mind being careful and sensible but I have not done even a fraction of what I thought I would be doing and that is COVID and Brexit I just lost impetus and enthusiasm.

The UK cam belt guidance was just a scam, IMHO.
I think most of us are experienced enough to know that cam belts deteriorate with use and I'm happy to take responsibility for my own van's maintenance. I won't give advice on cam belt change intervals because we're all old enough to make our own minds up.
 
So is this now 5yr and what mileage for T6 2L?
No time on it now, just the mileage - 120000km if I remember rightly.

That said I've just had my belt/waterpump done again after 6 years due to a noise I suspected was one of the idlers or tensioners. Only done about 6000 miles since the last belt change so usage patterns matter (sitting idle for long periods doesn't help bearings).

Currently VW recommends every 140,000 miles.

Sounds to me like they are after a few pricey engine re build jobs.
Mine was done at 4.5 years and 65,000 as specified at the time by VW.

So what changed overnight that more than doubled the life of the belt?
 
....... I think I know the answer to my own question!

In anticipation of the new wonder wet belt in the Frankensporter, VW thought they would match the intervals of the Ford lump.
Even though Ford have now reduced the milage of the belt they swore there was no issues with.
