Pretty sure there's a van in this month's issue of VWt that had just this mod. In the reader's van section IIRC.

If you want it done right you’d weld a circle of metal into the recess, not sure that’s always being done though!

you need to weld a plate in. if you just add filler it will sink eventually and look a general mess.

Ever since I bought my first VW, there's been debate over the concept of badge-on versus badge-off. Maybe it was just a thing back then, when modifying MkII Golfs, but I still have a preference for a de-badged front end!
Some say that if you've got a VW you should proudly display the brand, and others take the view that if you really belong to the family you'll recognise the vehicle without its badge!
I'm sure there's a host of views on here - and I'd love to hear them!

I love a nice badge! Just added 4 extra ones on the wheel centres too. The coffee, tea and sugar tins are badged, the impressively fat drinks coasters we have are as well. VW flag for the flagpole! Love it all!
